Native Plants for South Carolina - What to Plant, and When
South Carolina spans one ecoregion:Eastern Temperate Forests
South Carolina runs from the sea islands through the sandhills to the piedmont and a Blue Ridge corner in the northwest. The coast is live oak, saw palmetto, wax myrtle and salt marsh; the sandhills are longleaf pine and wiregrass on deep sand; the piedmont is oak and hickory with native azaleas, and the upstate mountains hold rhododendron and mountain wildflowers. Zones run from 7a in the mountains to 9a on the coast.
Long, hot summers decide what thrives here. Plant from October through February so natives root in the mild winter, and favor the drought-tough keystones: oaks, native plums, goldenrods, asters and butterfly weed. On the coast, salt and sand narrow the list further, and the sea island natives on this page are the ones that cope. Set your zone above; the dates follow your frost, not the state's.

Common questions
- What plants are native to South Carolina?
- 'Angel Wings' Foamflower, Adam's Needle, Allegheny Serviceberry, Allegheny Spurge, Alum Root, American Beautyberry, American Beech, American Bellflower, and 286 more are native to South Carolina. Every one links to its own growing page.
- When should I plant natives in South Carolina?
- Timing depends on your hardiness zone. Each plant on this page shows its sowing and bloom window relative to your zone's last spring and first fall frost, so the dates stay correct wherever in South Carolina you garden. As a rule, plant perennials and shrubs in early fall, at least six weeks before the first frost, or in spring once the soil drains.
- What hardiness zones does South Carolina cover?
- South Carolina runs from zone 7a to 9a. Pick your zone at the top of the page and the list re-sorts for it.
- Which keystone plants should I start with in South Carolina?
- American Plum, Beach Sunflower, Black Cherry, Black Oak, Black-Eyed Susan, Boxelder, among others. Keystone plants host the most caterpillar species in their ecoregion, which is what feeds nesting birds; one oak or native cherry does more than a bed of showy non-natives. Use the Keystones only toggle to see all 58.
How this list is built
Native ranges follow the USDA PLANTS Database; hardiness ranges follow USDA Plant Hardiness Zones; pollinator value draws on the Xerces Society. Where a reference almanac would stop at “confirm with your local authority,” we go one step further - every plant here links to its full growing page with frost-relative tasks for your zone.
Nature timing varies year to year. To calibrate to your own yard, the Garden Digest builds a weekly task list around your plants and frost dates.
