Viburnum dentatum is a multi-stemmed deciduous shrub native to eastern North America, from Maine south to northern Florida and east Texas. It produces flat-topped white flower clusters in late spring, followed by dark blue-black drupes in late summer and fall, and closes the season with reliable red-to-burgundy foliage. It ranks among the highest-value fruiting shrubs for wildlife in its native range.
The shrub adapts well to clay, wet, and moderately dry soils once established, and performs in full sun to part shade. It spreads slowly by root suckers to form multi-stem colonies, which is useful for slope stabilization and erosion control. Two genetically distinct plants situated within 50 feet of each other substantially improve fruit production through cross-pollination. It tolerates a wide pH range but performs best in slightly acidic to neutral soil; a 2–3 inch mulch layer conserves moisture and reduces competition from weeds.
The common name reflects the use of the straight, hard stems by Native peoples as arrow shafts. The dark berries are consumed by more than 35 bird species including thrushes, cedar waxwings, and bluebirds. Viburnum leaf beetle, which can defoliate the shrub over multiple seasons, is the most significant pest concern in the northeastern United States.
Powdery mildew
White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.
Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.
Phytophthora Root Rot
Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.
Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.
Armillaria Root Rot
Thinning, yellowing canopy with progressive dieback; white, fan-shaped mycelial mats visible beneath bark at or just below the soil line; honey-colored mushroom clusters appearing at the trunk base or on surface roots in autumn.
No chemical cure exists. Improve drainage and avoid any injury to roots or trunk. Remove severely infected trees along with as much root material as possible. Do not replant susceptible species in the same spot.
Fungal leaf spot
Brown or purplish spots on the leaves, often ringed with a yellow halo, that spread and merge in warm, humid, or wet weather; heavily spotted leaves yellow and drop early.
Pick off spotted leaves and clear fallen debris to remove overwintering spores. Improve air circulation by thinning, and water at the base so foliage dries quickly. If it persists, apply a copper- or sulfur-based fungicide at the first sign.
