Thermopsis villosa is a native perennial legume from the southern Appalachian Mountains, where it grows on woodland edges, open slopes, and roadsides. It produces upright racemes of bright yellow, pea-shaped flowers in late spring and is frequently mistaken for true lupine (Lupinus). Long-lived and low-maintenance once established, it earns a place in native plantings, meadow gardens, and naturalistic borders.
As a legume, it fixes atmospheric nitrogen through root symbiosis with soil bacteria, gradually enriching surrounding soil. Plants spread slowly by rhizomes to form broad clumps and develop a deep taproot that makes established specimens drought-tolerant but very difficult to move. Seeds require scarification or cold stratification to break dormancy; fall direct-sowing is the most reliable establishment method. Plants typically take two or more seasons to flower from seed. The inflating seed pods are ornamental through summer and shatter when ripe, allowing self-sowing.
The plant contains quinolizidine alkaloids chemically similar to those in true lupines, making it toxic if ingested by humans or livestock. These compounds account for its strong resistance to deer and rabbits.
Lupin Anthracnose
Twisted, bending stems with sunken brown lesions; leaves develop dark spots and may collapse. Pink spore masses can appear on infected tissue in wet weather.
Remove and destroy infected plants. Use clean, treated seed and avoid overhead watering. Space plants for airflow and rotate planting sites to reduce spore buildup.
Fungal leaf spot
Brown or purplish spots on the leaves, often ringed with a yellow halo, that spread and merge in warm, humid, or wet weather; heavily spotted leaves yellow and drop early.
Pick off spotted leaves and clear fallen debris to remove overwintering spores. Improve air circulation by thinning, and water at the base so foliage dries quickly. If it persists, apply a copper- or sulfur-based fungicide at the first sign.
Powdery mildew
White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.
Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.
Aphids
Aphididae →Clusters of small soft insects on new growth and flower buds.
Knock off with a strong jet of water. Ladybirds and lacewings are natural predators. Insecticidal soap as last resort.
Slug and Snail Damage
Deroceras reticulatum →Large irregular holes chewed in leaves, with slime trails on foliage and soil.
Hand-pick at night, set beer traps, or apply iron phosphate bait. Remove debris and mulch where they hide.
