Sarracenia purpurea is a carnivorous perennial native to sphagnum bogs, fens, and pocosins across eastern North America. Its modified leaves form upright, water-holding pitchers that trap insects and other small organisms, supplementing nutrient intake in the nitrogen-poor wetlands where it evolved. It is among the hardiest carnivorous plants in cultivation and can anchor a bog garden or container water feature from zone 3 to zone 9.
Successful cultivation depends almost entirely on media and water quality. Use only pure sphagnum moss, a 50/50 peat and perlite blend, or a similar nutrient-free mix; standard potting soil or fertilizer will kill the plant. Water exclusively with rainwater, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water — dissolved minerals in tap water are lethal over time. Keep roots permanently wet by sitting containers in a shallow tray of standing water. A cold-winter dormancy is necessary for long-term vigor; plants held warm year-round decline. Cold-hardy strains tolerate temperatures well below 0°F under snow cover.
Cree and other eastern Indigenous nations used root preparations of S. purpurea for kidney and liver complaints and as part of a smallpox treatment protocol. Laboratory research has since identified hypoglycemic compounds, and anti-diabetic activity remains an active area of study. The pitchers sustain a specialized inquiline community — bacteria, protozoa, rotifers, and the obligate pitcher-plant mosquito Wyeomyia smithii — organisms found in no other habitat.
Botrytis (grey mould)
Grey fuzzy mould on petals and stems, worst in cool wet conditions.
Remove affected parts immediately. Improve air circulation. Avoid overhead watering. Apply copper fungicide if severe.
Root rot
Plants wilt, yellow, and stunt even in moist soil; lower stems and roots turn brown, soft, and mushy and the plant may collapse. Most common in heavy, wet, or poorly drained ground.
Improve drainage and stop overwatering, and never plant too deep. Lift and destroy badly affected plants along with the soil around the roots. Grow in raised or free-draining beds to prevent it returning.
