American beautyberry is a native deciduous shrub of the southeastern United States, known for its dense clusters of vivid magenta-purple berries that encircle the arching stems each fall. At least 40 bird species and white-tailed deer consume the fruit, making it one of the most ecologically productive native shrubs for the region.
In zones 6–7, stems commonly die back to the roots in severe winters but regrow vigorously; plants still fruit well when cut back hard each late winter, since fruit is produced on new wood. In zones 8–10 it behaves as semi-evergreen to evergreen. It tolerates clay soils and moderate drought once established and performs well at woodland edges with part shade through mid-day. Mulching the root zone improves moisture retention and protects roots in zone 6 winters. Suckers slowly from the base and can spread into a loose colony if not managed.
USDA Agricultural Research Service scientists confirmed that compounds in the leaves — callicarpenal and intermedeol — repel mosquitoes, ticks, and fire ants as effectively as DEET in laboratory assays, corroborating long-standing use of crushed leaves as an insect deterrent among southeastern Indigenous nations. Cherokee and other communities used leaf and root preparations for fever, rheumatism, and dysentery. The berries are mildly astringent raw but can be cooked into jelly.
Powdery mildew
White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.
Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.
Cercospora Leaf Spot
Small round spots with tan or gray centers and reddish-purple borders on leaves. Spots merge in severe cases, causing leaves to brown and die back.
Remove infected leaves and avoid overhead watering. Space plants for airflow and rotate crops. Apply a copper-based fungicide if the infection spreads.
Phytophthora Root Rot
Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.
Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.
