Tradescantia ohiensis is a native herbaceous perennial found across eastern and central North America, from Maine to Minnesota and south to Texas and Florida. It produces clusters of three-petaled flowers in shades of blue and violet that open in the morning and close by midday. As the most widespread Tradescantia species in the US, it suits naturalistic plantings, pollinator gardens, and native borders, attracting bumblebees and sweat bees.
Plants form arching, strap-leaved clumps that spread readily by self-seeding and can become aggressive in rich, moist soils. Cutting stems back by half after the main bloom period typically triggers a second flush of growth and a second round of flowering in late summer. Established clumps benefit from division every two to three years to prevent crowding. The plant tolerates part shade, summer drought once established, and clay soils.
Native American groups used the roots as a laxative and for digestive complaints and applied crushed leaves topically to skin irritations. Young shoots and flowers are edible raw. The stamen hairs of Tradescantia species are unusually sensitive to ionizing radiation and mutagens, making them a subject of ongoing biological monitoring research.
Rust
Orange to brown raised pustules on the undersides of leaves, with yellow spotting on the upper surface. Heavy infections cause leaves to yellow and drop.
Remove and destroy infected leaves. Avoid overhead watering and improve air circulation. Apply a sulfur or copper-based fungicide if it spreads. Clear plant debris in fall.
Cercospora Leaf Spot
Small round spots with tan or gray centers and reddish-purple borders on leaves. Spots merge in severe cases, causing leaves to brown and die back.
Remove infected leaves and avoid overhead watering. Space plants for airflow and rotate crops. Apply a copper-based fungicide if the infection spreads.
Spider Mites

Spray foliage with a strong jet of water to dislodge mites. Apply insecticidal soap or horticultural oil to leaf undersides; repeat every 5–7 days as needed.

Knock off with a strong jet of water. Ladybirds and lacewings are natural predators. Insecticidal soap as last resort.
Slug and Snail Damage
Deroceras reticulatum →Large irregular holes chewed in leaves, with slime trails on foliage and soil.
Hand-pick at night, set beer traps, or apply iron phosphate bait. Remove debris and mulch where they hide.
