Winterberry is a deciduous native holly found along wetland margins, stream banks, and forest edges throughout eastern North America. Unlike most hollies, it drops its leaves in fall, leaving bare branches loaded with dense clusters of red berries that persist through winter and into early spring. It is among the most effective native shrubs for cold-season garden interest.
The plant is dioecious — both male and female specimens are required for berry production. Plant at least one male cultivar for every five to six females, selecting cultivars with overlapping flowering periods. Winterberry spreads slowly by root suckers and can form colonies over time. It thrives in moist to wet, acidic soil and is well suited to rain gardens, pond edges, and low-lying areas where drainage is poor. Soil pH below 6.0 is important for long-term health; alkaline soil causes chlorosis. Berries are toxic to humans and pets.
Berries are a documented food source for at least 48 bird species, including cedar waxwings, robins, and bluebirds, making winterberry a key component of native plantings designed to support overwintering wildlife. The plant supports specialist native bees during its late-spring flowering period. Bark was used in traditional Indigenous medicine as a bitter tonic and for fever, though the presence of toxic alkaloids makes it unsafe for self-treatment.
Powdery mildew
White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.
Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.
Phytophthora Root Rot
Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.
Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.
Cercospora Leaf Spot
Small round spots with tan or gray centers and reddish-purple borders on leaves. Spots merge in severe cases, causing leaves to brown and die back.
Remove infected leaves and avoid overhead watering. Space plants for airflow and rotate crops. Apply a copper-based fungicide if the infection spreads.
Holly Tar Spot
Yellow spots appear on upper leaf surfaces in early summer and enlarge into raised, black, tar-like lesions by late summer; infected leaves drop early.
Rake and dispose of all fallen leaves in autumn to eliminate overwintering spores. Apply a copper-based fungicide at bud break if infection was heavy the prior season.
Spider Mites

Spray foliage with a strong jet of water to dislodge mites. Apply insecticidal soap or horticultural oil to leaf undersides; repeat every 5–7 days as needed.
Holly Scale
Dynaspidiotus britannicus →White or gray waxy bumps on stems and undersides of leaves; yellowing foliage, reduced vigor, and sooty mold developing from honeydew deposits.
Apply dormant horticultural oil before bud break to smother overwintering scales. Spray insecticidal soap or summer-weight horticultural oil when crawlers emerge in early summer. Prune and destroy heavily infested stems.
