Background

Drooping Leucothoe is an arching evergreen shrub native to streambanks and forested slopes of the Appalachian region. Its glossy, lance-shaped leaves are deep green in summer and shift to bronze, burgundy, or purple through fall and winter, providing year-round interest in shaded areas where few shrubs perform reliably. Pendant clusters of small, white, urn-shaped flowers line the arching stems in spring.

The plant requires consistently moist, acidic soil (pH 4.5–6.0) and performs best under the open canopy of deciduous trees that admits winter light. A deep mulch of shredded leaves or pine bark maintains soil moisture, moderates root-zone temperature, and preserves the soil acidity the plant depends on. Foliage may scorch on exposed or wind-swept sites in winter; in small gardens the rhizomatous spread warrants periodic removal of outlying stems at ground level.

The spreading habit makes Leucothoe effective for stabilizing shaded slopes and streambanks against erosion. Spring flowers attract early bumblebees. Like other Ericaceae, the foliage contains grayanotoxins, making plants reliably resistant to deer browse — a practical benefit in woodland gardens where deer pressure is high.

Phytophthora Root Rot

Symptoms

Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.

Treatment

Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.

Fungal leaf spot

Symptoms

Brown or purplish spots on the leaves, often ringed with a yellow halo, that spread and merge in warm, humid, or wet weather; heavily spotted leaves yellow and drop early.

Treatment

Pick off spotted leaves and clear fallen debris to remove overwintering spores. Improve air circulation by thinning, and water at the base so foliage dries quickly. If it persists, apply a copper- or sulfur-based fungicide at the first sign.

Leaf gall

Symptoms

Leaves, buds, or young shoots thicken into pale green, reddish, or whitish fleshy galls that later turn white with a powdery spore bloom before browning.

Treatment

Pick off and destroy galls before they turn white and shed spores. Improve air circulation and avoid overhead watering in spring. The damage is largely cosmetic and rarely needs fungicide.

Botryosphaeria Canker

Symptoms

Dark, sunken cankers on stems and major branches, most often occurring after drought stress or mechanical wounding. Bark peeled back from affected areas reveals brown, discolored wood beneath. Branch tips wilt and die back progressively inward.

Treatment

Prune infected branches at least 6 inches below the visible canker margin using sterilized tools, and dispose of all cuttings away from the garden. Reduce plant stress by maintaining consistent irrigation during dry periods and avoiding bark wounds during maintenance. No curative fungicide is available; keeping plants vigorous is the primary preventive strategy.
