Large Fothergilla is a deciduous native shrub from the Allegheny and southern Appalachian Mountains, growing naturally in mountain woodlands and swamp margins. It earns a place in the landscape through two distinct seasons of interest: fragrant white bottlebrush flower clusters in early spring, opening at the same time as or just ahead of the glossy emerging foliage, and reliable fall color in shades of red, orange, and yellow.

It grows slowly into a dense, multi-stemmed clump. Acidic, moist, well-drained soil is essential; it tolerates periodic wetness but struggles in prolonged drought or alkaline conditions. Full sun produces the most vivid fall color, though the plant grows and flowers well in part shade. Mulching with shredded leaves or bark helps hold moisture and maintains the low soil pH it needs. It spreads gradually by root suckers, which can be removed to keep a tidy clump or left to naturalize into a mass.

The spring flowers are an early-season pollen source for native bees, including specialist visitors in the Hamamelidaceae family. As a native understory shrub, it supports caterpillar diversity and integrates well into naturalistic eastern woodland plantings.

Common problems

Phytophthora Root Rot

Symptoms

Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.

Treatment

Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.

Powdery mildew

Symptoms

White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.

Treatment

Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.

Fungal leaf spot

Symptoms

Brown or purplish spots on the leaves, often ringed with a yellow halo, that spread and merge in warm, humid, or wet weather; heavily spotted leaves yellow and drop early.

Treatment

Pick off spotted leaves and clear fallen debris to remove overwintering spores. Improve air circulation by thinning, and water at the base so foliage dries quickly. If it persists, apply a copper- or sulfur-based fungicide at the first sign.

Leaf gall

Symptoms

Leaves, buds, or young shoots thicken into pale green, reddish, or whitish fleshy galls that later turn white with a powdery spore bloom before browning.

Treatment

Pick off and destroy galls before they turn white and shed spores. Improve air circulation and avoid overhead watering in spring. The damage is largely cosmetic and rarely needs fungicide.
