Adam's Needle is an evergreen shrub native to the southeastern United States, grown for its bold rosette of rigid, sword-shaped leaves edged with curling white filaments. It tolerates drought, sandy or rocky soil, coastal salt spray, and cold to zone 5a given sharp drainage, making it one of the most reliable architectural plants for difficult sites. Tall, branching stalks bearing hundreds of creamy white, pendulous bells rise in early to midsummer.

Each mature rosette typically dies after flowering and setting seed, but basal offsets keep the colony going. The plant has a mutualistic relationship with the yucca moth (Tegeticula yuccasella), its primary pollinator; moth larvae consume a portion of the seeds in exchange. In gardens outside the moth's range, fruit set is unlikely without hand pollination. Sharp drainage is the single most critical factor for long-term success; the plant handles drought far better than wet winters.

Root bark contains steroidal saponins used historically by Native American peoples as a soap and shampoo substitute. The flowers are edible raw or lightly cooked. Root extracts appear in commercial supplements marketed for joint inflammation, and saponins from the genus Yucca show anti-inflammatory and antifungal activity in laboratory studies.

Common problems

Crown Rot

Symptoms

Lower leaves yellow and wilt; the base of the rosette turns brown and soft, sometimes with white fungal threads at the soil line. Plants collapse in wet conditions.

Treatment

Remove and destroy affected plants. Improve drainage and avoid overhead watering. Do not mulch directly against the crown. Space plants for airflow and avoid replanting in the same wet spot.

Root rot

Symptoms

Plants wilt, yellow, and stunt even in moist soil; lower stems and roots turn brown, soft, and mushy and the plant may collapse. Most common in heavy, wet, or poorly drained ground.

Treatment

Improve drainage and stop overwatering, and never plant too deep. Lift and destroy badly affected plants along with the soil around the roots. Grow in raised or free-draining beds to prevent it returning.

Fungal leaf spot

Symptoms

Brown or purplish spots on the leaves, often ringed with a yellow halo, that spread and merge in warm, humid, or wet weather; heavily spotted leaves yellow and drop early.

Treatment

Pick off spotted leaves and clear fallen debris to remove overwintering spores. Improve air circulation by thinning, and water at the base so foliage dries quickly. If it persists, apply a copper- or sulfur-based fungicide at the first sign.
