Hesperaloe parviflora is a clumping succulent native to the Chihuahuan and Coahuilan deserts of northern Mexico and Texas. Despite the common name, it is not a true yucca but belongs to the same family (Asparagaceae). Gardeners grow it for extreme drought tolerance, a flowering season that spans three to four months, and reliable attraction of hummingbirds and long-tongued bees.
The plant forms a low, arching rosette of narrow, dark green leaves edged with curly white fibers. In late spring, slender stalks rise 4–6 ft above the foliage and carry nodding coral-red to salmon tubular flowers through midsummer and often into fall. It spreads slowly by offsets and demands almost no maintenance once established. The critical requirement is fast-draining soil — clay or any site where water pools after rain invites crown and root rot, the main failure modes in cultivation. No supplemental fertilizer is needed; rich soil produces lax foliage at the expense of flowering. Mulch should be kept away from the crown.
Beyond private gardens, red yucca is a fixture of xeriscape plantings, highway medians, and commercial landscapes across the Southwest and South-central U.S. It tolerates reflected heat from pavement and walls and performs well in containers where drainage can be controlled precisely.
Crown Rot
Lower leaves yellow and wilt; the base of the rosette turns brown and soft, sometimes with white fungal threads at the soil line. Plants collapse in wet conditions.
Remove and destroy affected plants. Improve drainage and avoid overhead watering. Do not mulch directly against the crown. Space plants for airflow and avoid replanting in the same wet spot.
Root rot
Plants wilt, yellow, and stunt even in moist soil; lower stems and roots turn brown, soft, and mushy and the plant may collapse. Most common in heavy, wet, or poorly drained ground.
Improve drainage and stop overwatering, and never plant too deep. Lift and destroy badly affected plants along with the soil around the roots. Grow in raised or free-draining beds to prevent it returning.
