Native to the central Appalachian Mountains and the Ozarks, black locust is a fast-growing deciduous hardwood with some of the most rot-resistant and hardest wood produced by any North American tree. Root-nodule bacteria fix atmospheric nitrogen, improving soil fertility wherever the tree establishes, and its dense hanging clusters of white, fragrant flowers in late spring are a major forage source for honeybees.
The tree tolerates poor, dry, compacted, rocky, and sandy soils where most species struggle. It spreads aggressively through root suckers and prolific self-seeding and is classified as invasive across much of Europe, Asia, and parts of North America well outside its native range. Cutting or mowing stumps stimulates vigorous resprouting; applying a systemic herbicide immediately to cut surfaces is far more effective than repeated cutting alone. The species responds well to coppicing and is widely used in erosion control, mine reclamation, and agroforestry systems.
Black locust flowers are edible and are the floral source of European acacia honey, one of the most commercially prized varietal honeys worldwide. The wood ranks among the highest in BTU content of any North American hardwood and is exceptionally durable in ground contact, historically used for fence posts, ship treenails, and mine timbers. Bark, seeds, inner wood, and leaves contain toxic glycosides including robin and robitin; only the flowers are considered safe for consumption.
Fungal leaf spot
Brown or purplish spots on the leaves, often ringed with a yellow halo, that spread and merge in warm, humid, or wet weather; heavily spotted leaves yellow and drop early.
Pick off spotted leaves and clear fallen debris to remove overwintering spores. Improve air circulation by thinning, and water at the base so foliage dries quickly. If it persists, apply a copper- or sulfur-based fungicide at the first sign.
Armillaria Root Rot
Thinning, yellowing canopy with progressive dieback; white, fan-shaped mycelial mats visible beneath bark at or just below the soil line; honey-colored mushroom clusters appearing at the trunk base or on surface roots in autumn.
No chemical cure exists. Improve drainage and avoid any injury to roots or trunk. Remove severely infected trees along with as much root material as possible. Do not replant susceptible species in the same spot.
Ganoderma Butt Rot
White rot of heartwood at the base and lower trunk. Large, hard, shelf-like bracket fungi with a shiny reddish-brown upper surface and cream-colored pore surface appear at or near the soil line. Infected trees lose structural integrity with little visible external warning until failure.
No effective chemical treatment once established. Remove and destroy conks before they release spores. Have a certified arborist assess structural risk; removal is often required for trees near structures or high-traffic areas. Prevent infection by avoiding root collar wounds, reducing soil compaction, and maintaining tree health.
Thyronectria Canker
Elongated, sunken cankers form on branches and the main trunk; bark over infected areas shows orange-red discoloration beneath the surface when sliced. Small orange wart-like spore pustules appear on canker margins during wet weather. Foliage and branches above the canker wilt and die back.
Prune cankered wood at least 6 inches below visible discoloration and disinfect tools between cuts with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Avoid pruning during wet weather to limit spore dispersal. No chemical treatment is effective once infection is established; focus on maintaining tree vigor through proper siting and avoiding bark wounds from equipment or improper pruning.
