Viburnum cassinoides is a native deciduous shrub distributed across eastern North America, from Newfoundland south along the Appalachians and west to the upper Midwest. It delivers three seasons of garden interest: creamy white flat-topped clusters in late spring, fruit that shifts through green, pink, red, and finally blue-black from midsummer into fall, and red to burgundy foliage in autumn. It suits naturalistic plantings, rain gardens, and shrub borders where soil stays consistently moist.
Naturally found along stream banks, pond margins, and bog edges, it tolerates seasonal flooding better than most ornamental viburnums. In gardens it adapts well provided soil moisture is maintained; a 3-inch mulch layer helps retain moisture and buffer pH toward the slightly acidic range of 5.5–6.5 that this shrub prefers. Root suckers are common and can be removed to keep a single-clump habit or left to establish a loose colony. Cold-hardiness to zone 3a makes it one of the toughest native viburnums available.
The fully ripe, darkened fruit is edible and sweet, developing a raisin-like flavor when shriveled—the origin of the common name. Indigenous peoples of eastern North America consumed the berries fresh and dried them for later use. The fruiting stems are a reliable food source for migratory thrushes, waxwings, and other fruit-eating birds in fall.
Fungal leaf spot
Brown or purplish spots on the leaves, often ringed with a yellow halo, that spread and merge in warm, humid, or wet weather; heavily spotted leaves yellow and drop early.
Pick off spotted leaves and clear fallen debris to remove overwintering spores. Improve air circulation by thinning, and water at the base so foliage dries quickly. If it persists, apply a copper- or sulfur-based fungicide at the first sign.
Powdery mildew
White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.
Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.
Phytophthora Root Rot
Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.
Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.
