Butterfly weed is a native North American milkweed with bright orange (occasionally yellow or red) flower clusters that bloom from late spring through midsummer. Unlike most milkweeds, its sap is clear rather than milky. It is among the most effective plants for attracting monarch butterflies, serving as both a nectar source and a larval host plant.
The plant develops a deep, fleshy taproot that makes it drought tolerant once established but very difficult to transplant once mature. It is slow to emerge in spring — often not showing growth until late April or May — so mark planting locations to avoid accidental damage. It performs best in lean, well-drained soils; rich or wet soils encourage root rot and reduce flowering. It spreads slowly from the crown and does not produce aggressive rhizomes like some milkweed relatives. Cold stratification improves germination rates significantly when starting from seed.
Native Americans used the dried root for respiratory conditions, which gave rise to the alternate common name pleurisy root. The cardiac glycosides the plant produces accumulate in monarch larvae and make adult butterflies distasteful to bird predators. Asclepias tuberosa supports over 450 insect species, including numerous native bee species and hummingbirds.

Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.
Aphids

Knock off with a strong jet of water. Ladybirds and lacewings are natural predators. Insecticidal soap as last resort.
Milkweed Tussock Moth
Euchaetes egle →Dense clusters of tufted caterpillars with black, white, and orange hairs feed gregariously on leaf tissue, skeletonizing leaves from the margins inward. Heavy infestations can strip multiple stems bare by late summer.
Handpick early-instar clusters before they disperse across the planting. Plants reliably rebound from defoliation and larvae do not threaten root survival. Avoid Bt sprays and other insecticides — they are non-selective and will kill monarch caterpillars feeding on the same plants.
Spider Mites

Spray foliage with a strong jet of water to dislodge mites. Apply insecticidal soap or horticultural oil to leaf undersides; repeat every 5–7 days as needed.
