Background

Sweet acacia (Vachellia farnesiana) is a thorny, multi-stemmed shrub or small tree in the legume family, native to tropical Americas and naturalized across warm regions worldwide. Its small, spherical yellow flower clusters appear in late winter to spring and carry an intense fragrance — the source of cassie absolute, an essential oil used in high-end perfumery since the 17th century.

As a nitrogen-fixing legume, it gradually improves soil fertility and performs well in drought, poor soils, and minimal care once established. Dense, spiny branching provides effective barrier hedging and wildlife habitat. It spreads aggressively by seed in frost-free climates and is listed as invasive in parts of Australia, Hawaii, and South Africa. In zone 8, hard freezes kill stems to the ground but plants typically resprout from the root crown; mulching the root zone before first frost improves cold survival. This species tolerates alkaline soils and a pH range of 6.0–8.0.

Flowers are edible and used in salads and sweets in parts of Latin America and the Mediterranean. Bark tannins have documented astringent properties and are used traditionally in wound care and for skin conditions.

Common problems

Texas Root Rot

Symptoms

Sudden wilting of branches or the entire canopy, often following a wet period. White cottony fungal mats develop on infected roots. Wood at the crown appears dark and water-soaked. Decline can progress to tree death within weeks.

Treatment

No effective chemical cure exists. Ensure excellent drainage and avoid overwatering. Remove and destroy all infected plant material. Avoid replanting susceptible species in the same soil for several years.

Armillaria Root Rot

Symptoms

Thinning, yellowing canopy with progressive dieback; white, fan-shaped mycelial mats visible beneath bark at or just below the soil line; honey-colored mushroom clusters appearing at the trunk base or on surface roots in autumn.

Treatment

No chemical cure exists. Improve drainage and avoid any injury to roots or trunk. Remove severely infected trees along with as much root material as possible. Do not replant susceptible species in the same spot.

Sooty Mold (Scale-Associated)

Symptoms

Black, powdery or crusty coating on upper leaf surfaces and stems. Affected leaves may yellow and drop in severe cases. The mold grows on honeydew secreted by scale insects, mealybugs, or aphids feeding on the plant.

Treatment

Control the underlying pest infestation first using horticultural oil or neem oil applied thoroughly to stems and leaf undersides. Once pest populations are reduced, sooty mold stops spreading and weathers away over time. Rinse foliage with a strong stream of water to dislodge existing mold deposits.
