Summer lupine (Lupinus formosus) is a wildflower native to California and Oregon, growing on open grasslands, dry slopes, and chaparral. It belongs to the legume family and produces tall racemes of blue to violet flowers that attract bumble bees, hummingbirds, and other native pollinators. It is well suited to western native plant gardens and low-water landscapes.
As a legume, it fixes atmospheric nitrogen through root nodules, improving soil fertility over time. It develops a deep taproot early, making transplanting unreliable — direct seeding is strongly preferred. In its native range it germinates after fall rains and blooms from late spring through summer. Plants behave as short-lived perennials or biennials but self-seed reliably in suitable dry, sunny sites. Seeds benefit from scarification or a 24-hour warm-water soak before sowing.
Summer lupine supports specialist native bees that sonicate the flowers to release pollen. It is used in habitat restoration and revegetation projects across California and Oregon, where it stabilizes disturbed soils and builds organic matter through leaf litter and root turnover.
Powdery mildew
White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.
Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.
Lupin Anthracnose
Twisted, bending stems with sunken brown lesions; leaves develop dark spots and may collapse. Pink spore masses can appear on infected tissue in wet weather.
Remove and destroy infected plants. Use clean, treated seed and avoid overhead watering. Space plants for airflow and rotate planting sites to reduce spore buildup.
Fungal leaf spot
Brown or purplish spots on the leaves, often ringed with a yellow halo, that spread and merge in warm, humid, or wet weather; heavily spotted leaves yellow and drop early.
Pick off spotted leaves and clear fallen debris to remove overwintering spores. Improve air circulation by thinning, and water at the base so foliage dries quickly. If it persists, apply a copper- or sulfur-based fungicide at the first sign.
Damping Off
Seedlings collapse at the soil line with thin, water-soaked stems; seeds may fail to emerge or rot before sprouting.
Sow in well-draining mix, avoid overwatering, and ensure good airflow. Remove affected seedlings and let the surface dry between waterings.
Aphids
Aphididae →Clusters of small soft insects on new growth and flower buds.
Knock off with a strong jet of water. Ladybirds and lacewings are natural predators. Insecticidal soap as last resort.
