Background

Lupinus latifolius is a native perennial lupine of western North America, ranging from British Columbia south to Baja California and east to New Mexico. It grows 2–6 feet tall with large palmate leaves and dense spires of pea-like flowers in purple, blue, or white. It supports bumblebees and native solitary bees and serves as a documented larval host plant for several native lycaenid butterflies, including species in the Icaricia complex.

Like all lupines, broadleaf lupine fixes atmospheric nitrogen through root symbiosis with Rhizobium bacteria, making it valuable in habitat restoration and native perennial plantings. It performs best in well-drained, low-fertility soils — fertile amended beds tend to push leafy growth at the expense of flowering. Seeds have a hard coat that benefits from scarification or a 24-hour cold-water soak before sowing. Plants develop a deep taproot and strongly dislike transplanting once established, so site selection before sowing is important. Several subspecies and varieties exist, varying considerably in mature height and flower density.

Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest processed broadleaf lupine seeds as a food source, using repeated water leaching to remove the quinolizidine alkaloids present in raw seeds. These alkaloids make raw seeds and foliage potentially toxic to livestock when consumed in quantity, a relevant consideration in farm-adjacent or grazing contexts.

Common problems

Powdery mildew

Symptoms

White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.

Treatment

Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.

Lupin Anthracnose

Symptoms

Twisted, bending stems with sunken brown lesions; leaves develop dark spots and may collapse. Pink spore masses can appear on infected tissue in wet weather.

Treatment

Remove and destroy infected plants. Use clean, treated seed and avoid overhead watering. Space plants for airflow and rotate planting sites to reduce spore buildup.

Fungal leaf spot

Symptoms

Brown or purplish spots on the leaves, often ringed with a yellow halo, that spread and merge in warm, humid, or wet weather; heavily spotted leaves yellow and drop early.

Treatment

Pick off spotted leaves and clear fallen debris to remove overwintering spores. Improve air circulation by thinning, and water at the base so foliage dries quickly. If it persists, apply a copper- or sulfur-based fungicide at the first sign.

Damping Off

Symptoms

Seedlings collapse at the soil line with thin, water-soaked stems; seeds may fail to emerge or rot before sprouting.

Treatment

Sow in well-draining mix, avoid overwatering, and ensure good airflow. Remove affected seedlings and let the surface dry between waterings.

Phytophthora Root Rot

Symptoms

Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.

Treatment

Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.
