Sky lupine is a native California annual found on grassland slopes, roadsides, and disturbed flats from the coast ranges to the Sierra Nevada foothills. It produces whorls of violet-blue flowers in spring and fixes atmospheric nitrogen through root nodules, making it a functional component of wildflower meadows and habitat restorations.

As an annual, it germinates with autumn rains, grows through mild winters, and completes its cycle by early summer. It self-seeds readily in thin, disturbed, or compacted soils where competition is low. Avoid nitrogen fertilization — rich soil pushes foliage growth at the expense of flowering. Seeds benefit from light scarification or an overnight soak before sowing. pH between 5.5 and 7 is tolerated; alkaline soils reduce vigor.

Sky lupine is a documented larval host for the Boisduval's blue butterfly and attracts native bumblebees as primary pollinators. All plant parts contain quinolizidine alkaloids and are toxic to livestock and humans; avoid planting in or adjacent to grazing areas.

Powdery mildew

Lupin Anthracnose

Symptoms

Twisted, bending stems with sunken brown lesions; leaves develop dark spots and may collapse. Pink spore masses can appear on infected tissue in wet weather.

Treatment

Remove and destroy infected plants. Use clean, treated seed and avoid overhead watering. Space plants for airflow and rotate planting sites to reduce spore buildup.

Fungal leaf spot

Symptoms

Brown or purplish spots on the leaves, often ringed with a yellow halo, that spread and merge in warm, humid, or wet weather; heavily spotted leaves yellow and drop early.

Treatment

Pick off spotted leaves and clear fallen debris to remove overwintering spores. Improve air circulation by thinning, and water at the base so foliage dries quickly. If it persists, apply a copper- or sulfur-based fungicide at the first sign.

Damping Off

Symptoms

Seedlings collapse at the soil line with thin, water-soaked stems; seeds may fail to emerge or rot before sprouting.

Treatment

Sow in well-draining mix, avoid overwatering, and ensure good airflow. Remove affected seedlings and let the surface dry between waterings.
