Asclepias fascicularis is a drought-tolerant native perennial of the western United States, found on dry slopes, roadsides, and disturbed ground from Oregon to Baja California. It produces upright stems lined with narrow, whorled leaves and bears clusters of small pinkish-white flowers in summer. For gardens west of the Rockies, it is the most ecologically appropriate milkweed to plant.
The plant spreads slowly by rhizomes and is notably late to emerge in spring, often showing no growth until late May or early June. Once established it needs almost no supplemental water in western climates. It performs best in fast-draining, low-fertility soils and declines in heavy clay or regularly irrigated beds. Top growth dies back with frost each year; the root system is reliably cold-hardy within its range. Plants placed in a permanent spot establish faster, as they dislike being transplanted once roots are set.
Narrowleaf milkweed is a primary host plant for the western monarch butterfly population; females lay eggs on the foliage, and larvae depend on it exclusively. It also supports specialist native bees and predatory wasps. Several California tribes twisted the fibrous stems into cordage, and the latex was applied topically to warts and skin sores.
Rust
Orange to brown raised pustules on the undersides of leaves, with yellow spotting on the upper surface. Heavy infections cause leaves to yellow and drop.
Remove and destroy infected leaves. Avoid overhead watering and improve air circulation. Apply a sulfur or copper-based fungicide if it spreads. Clear plant debris in fall.
Powdery mildew
White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.
Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.
Aster Yellows
Deformed, greenish flowers, stunted growth, and yellowed foliage. Flower centers may produce tufts of leafy growth instead of normal petals.
No cure. Remove and destroy infected plants immediately to stop spread. Control leafhoppers, which transmit the disease, and remove nearby weed hosts.
