American cranberrybush is a native North American shrub distinct from its European relative, guelder rose, and among the most cold-tolerant ornamental shrubs available. It offers four-season interest: flat-topped white lacecap flower clusters in late spring, bold lobed foliage through summer, translucent scarlet berry clusters ripening in fall, and persistent fruit that feeds cedar waxwings, robins, and other birds through winter.

It grows naturally along stream margins, woodland edges, and moist floodplains, and tolerates periodic wet feet better than most ornamentals. A 3–4 inch organic mulch layer conserves moisture and moderates soil temperature; pH of 5.5–6.5 suits it well. Viburnum leaf beetle, an introduced pest, is the most significant threat and can completely strip foliage for two or three consecutive seasons if populations build unchecked. Cutting the oldest canes to the ground every few years prevents a congested thicket and maintains vigor.

The tart, pectin-rich berries have been used by numerous Indigenous nations and early settlers for jellies, syrups, and sauces. The bark — sold in herbal commerce as cramp bark — is well-documented in Western herbalism and Indigenous North American medicine as an antispasmodic, used primarily for uterine cramping, skeletal muscle spasms, and historically as a mild cardiovascular relaxant.

Common problems

Powdery mildew

Symptoms

White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.

Treatment

Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.

Fungal leaf spot

Symptoms

Brown or purplish spots on the leaves, often ringed with a yellow halo, that spread and merge in warm, humid, or wet weather; heavily spotted leaves yellow and drop early.

Treatment

Pick off spotted leaves and clear fallen debris to remove overwintering spores. Improve air circulation by thinning, and water at the base so foliage dries quickly. If it persists, apply a copper- or sulfur-based fungicide at the first sign.

Armillaria Root Rot

Symptoms

Thinning, yellowing canopy with progressive dieback; white, fan-shaped mycelial mats visible beneath bark at or just below the soil line; honey-colored mushroom clusters appearing at the trunk base or on surface roots in autumn.

Treatment

No chemical cure exists. Improve drainage and avoid any injury to roots or trunk. Remove severely infected trees along with as much root material as possible. Do not replant susceptible species in the same spot.
