Background

Gentiana newberryi is a compact perennial herb native to alpine and subalpine meadows in the Sierra Nevada and adjacent ranges of western North America. It forms tight basal rosettes and bears tubular white to pale blue flowers with striped throats in late summer and early fall, among the last plants to bloom in its high-elevation habitat.

In cultivation this species demands sharp drainage, rocky or gravelly acidic soil, and cool summers — conditions that mirror its mountain origins. Clay, waterlogged soil, and summer heat are not tolerated. Rock gardens, scree beds, and alpine troughs suit it best. It resents root disturbance once established and grows slowly; expect a full season before plants settle in. A winter mulch of dry coarse grit protects crowns in marginal zones without trapping moisture.

Like other Gentiana species, G. newberryi contains bitter secoiridoid glycosides responsible for the genus's long-standing use as a digestive bitter in traditional herbal medicine. Its late bloom provides nectar to high-elevation bumblebees when few other plants remain in flower in the alpine zone.

Common problems

Crown Rot

Symptoms

Lower leaves yellow and wilt; the base of the rosette turns brown and soft, sometimes with white fungal threads at the soil line. Plants collapse in wet conditions.

Treatment

Remove and destroy affected plants. Improve drainage and avoid overhead watering. Do not mulch directly against the crown. Space plants for airflow and avoid replanting in the same wet spot.

Root rot

Symptoms

Plants wilt, yellow, and stunt even in moist soil; lower stems and roots turn brown, soft, and mushy and the plant may collapse. Most common in heavy, wet, or poorly drained ground.

Treatment

Improve drainage and stop overwatering, and never plant too deep. Lift and destroy badly affected plants along with the soil around the roots. Grow in raised or free-draining beds to prevent it returning.

Damping Off

Symptoms

Seedlings collapse at the soil line with thin, water-soaked stems; seeds may fail to emerge or rot before sprouting.

Treatment

Sow in well-draining mix, avoid overwatering, and ensure good airflow. Remove affected seedlings and let the surface dry between waterings.

Botrytis (grey mould)

Symptoms

Grey fuzzy mould on petals and stems, worst in cool wet conditions.

Treatment

Remove affected parts immediately. Improve air circulation. Avoid overhead watering. Apply copper fungicide if severe.

Fungal leaf spot

Symptoms

Brown or purplish spots on the leaves, often ringed with a yellow halo, that spread and merge in warm, humid, or wet weather; heavily spotted leaves yellow and drop early.

Treatment

Pick off spotted leaves and clear fallen debris to remove overwintering spores. Improve air circulation by thinning, and water at the base so foliage dries quickly. If it persists, apply a copper- or sulfur-based fungicide at the first sign.
