Polemonium viscosum is a compact alpine wildflower native to high-elevation rocky slopes across western North America, from southern British Columbia south to Arizona and New Mexico. Its sticky, glandular foliage produces a strong musky odor that gives it the alternate name skunkweed. Dense clusters of blue-violet tubular flowers appear in late spring to early summer, making it one of the more distinctive plants available for true alpine and rock garden settings.

Sky pilot demands near-perfect drainage and cool summer temperatures. It performs best in gravelly or rocky, lean soil with little organic matter, closely mimicking its native scree and talus habitat. At lower elevations it struggles with heat and humidity; it is best suited to mountainous or northern gardens where summers stay reliably cool. Supplemental fertilizer promotes lush, rot-prone growth and should be avoided. A deep gravel mulch around the crown helps shed excess moisture.

Bumblebees are the primary pollinators of P. viscosum at high altitude. Research has documented that the sticky glandular hairs deter nectar-robbing ants and small insects, effectively reserving floral rewards for larger, legitimate pollinators—a studied example of plant-pollinator specificity in alpine ecology.

Common problems

Fungal leaf spot

Pick off spotted leaves and clear fallen debris to remove overwintering spores. Improve air circulation by thinning, and water at the base so foliage dries quickly. If it persists, apply a copper- or sulfur-based fungicide at the first sign.

Crown Rot

Symptoms

Lower leaves yellow and wilt; the base of the rosette turns brown and soft, sometimes with white fungal threads at the soil line. Plants collapse in wet conditions.

Treatment

Remove and destroy affected plants. Improve drainage and avoid overhead watering. Do not mulch directly against the crown. Space plants for airflow and avoid replanting in the same wet spot.

Powdery mildew

Symptoms

White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.

Treatment

Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.

Damping Off

Symptoms

Seedlings collapse at the soil line with thin, water-soaked stems; seeds may fail to emerge or rot before sprouting.

Treatment

Sow in well-draining mix, avoid overwatering, and ensure good airflow. Remove affected seedlings and let the surface dry between waterings.
