Asclepias subulata is a nearly leafless perennial milkweed native to the Sonoran and Mojave deserts of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. After an early-season leaf drop, upright green stems handle photosynthesis for the rest of the year and give the plant its alternate common name, rush milkweed. Cream-white flowers with reflexed corolla lobes appear from spring through fall and attract native bees, wasps, and butterflies.

In xeric landscapes it works as a structural accent in gravel gardens, desert washes, and dry slopes. It requires alkaline to neutral, fast-draining soil and declines quickly in clay or where water collects. Established plants tolerate months of drought and extreme heat without irrigation. Seed pods split open in fall to release plume-tipped seeds that disperse on wind, and plants can self-seed in suitable arid ground. A surface layer of decomposed granite helps buffer soil temperature without raising humidity around the crown.

It is one of the few milkweed host plants available to monarch butterflies during their winter migration through the Sonoran Desert, making it ecologically significant in that corridor. Oleander aphids colonize the stems regularly but rarely cause lasting harm; their presence draws predatory insects that typically stabilize populations without intervention.

watchCheck stems for monarch butterfly eggs and caterpillars. Suspend all pesticide use while monarchs are present; plants recover quickly from feeding damage in warm weather.
cutIn zone 8, cut frost-damaged stems back to live tissue in late winter. In zones 9–11, remove dead or deteriorating stems as needed to keep the clump tidy.
sowDirect sow after last frost when soil temperature is above 65°F. Lightly scarify seeds before planting, press onto dry sandy soil surface, and do not bury deeply. Germination can be slow and erratic.

watchInspect stems for dense colonies of oleander aphids (bright yellow body, black legs). Dislodge light infestations with a strong stream of water; predatory insects generally stabilize populations without further treatment.

Common problems

Rust

Symptoms

Orange to brown raised pustules on the undersides of leaves, with yellow spotting on the upper surface. Heavy infections cause leaves to yellow and drop.

Treatment

Remove and destroy infected leaves. Avoid overhead watering and improve air circulation. Apply a sulfur or copper-based fungicide if it spreads. Clear plant debris in fall.

Aster Yellows

Symptoms

Deformed, greenish flowers, stunted growth, and yellowed foliage. Flower centers may produce tufts of leafy growth instead of normal petals.

Treatment

No cure. Remove and destroy infected plants immediately to stop spread. Control leafhoppers, which transmit the disease, and remove nearby weed hosts.
