Background

Arizona Cypress (Hesperocyparis arizonica) is a fast-growing evergreen conifer native to scattered mountain ranges in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Adapted to intense heat, low rainfall, rocky or alkaline soils, and periodic hard freezes, it is widely planted as a windbreak, privacy screen, and specimen tree in arid and semi-arid climates. Foliage ranges from gray-green to silvery blue-gray due to a waxy cuticle; bark becomes furrowed and fibrous with age.

Fall planting is preferred in hot climates to allow root establishment before summer. Excellent drainage is essential — the species does not tolerate waterlogged or heavy clay soils. Overhead irrigation should be avoided on established trees, as persistent moisture on foliage and bark promotes Seiridium canker. Once the root system is established, supplemental watering can be sharply reduced except during prolonged drought. Trees grown in their native mountain habitat often establish from seed in rocky, disturbed soils with minimal organic matter.

Arizona Cypress provides dense nesting and thermal shelter cover for birds and small mammals. It has been cultivated commercially in the Southwest as a cut Christmas tree, and its aromatic, decay-resistant wood has historically served for fence posts and light construction.

Common problems

Seiridium Canker

Symptoms

Elongated, sunken cankers on branches or trunk with heavy amber to brown resin exudate. Foliage above the canker turns yellow then brown and dies. Multiple cankers can girdle a branch or stem completely.

Treatment

Prune infected branches 6–8 inches below the visible canker margin and dispose of material off-site. Sterilize tools with 70% isopropyl alcohol between every cut. No curative fungicide is available; focus on reducing tree stress through proper site selection, avoiding overhead irrigation, and ensuring good soil drainage.

Phytophthora Root Rot

Symptoms

Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.

Treatment

Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.

Armillaria Root Rot

Symptoms

Thinning, yellowing canopy with progressive dieback; white, fan-shaped mycelial mats visible beneath bark at or just below the soil line; honey-colored mushroom clusters appearing at the trunk base or on surface roots in autumn.

Treatment

No chemical cure exists. Improve drainage and avoid any injury to roots or trunk. Remove severely infected trees along with as much root material as possible. Do not replant susceptible species in the same spot.
