Lupinus subcarnosus is a winter annual native to the deep sandy soils of southeastern Texas and northeastern Mexico. It is one of several Lupinus species collectively designated the state flower of Texas. Plants reach about 16 inches tall and produce dense racemes of blue flowers with white-tipped upper petals from March through May before dying back as summer heat sets in.
Seeds have a hard coat that resists water uptake; scarifying with sandpaper or soaking overnight in warm water significantly improves germination. Sow in late September through October when air temperatures drop below 70°F. Plants emerge quickly, spend winter as ground-level rosettes, then bolt and bloom in spring. As a legume, it fixes atmospheric nitrogen through root nodules, improving soil for follow-on plantings. It self-seeds reliably in sandy, undisturbed soil and naturalizes well on dry slopes and roadsides.
All parts of the plant, especially the seeds, contain quinolizidine alkaloids toxic to livestock and humans if eaten in quantity. Native bumblebees and long-horned bees are its primary pollinators. The Texas Department of Transportation sows bluebonnet seed along highway rights-of-way as part of a long-running wildflower program.
Lupin Anthracnose
Twisted, bending stems with sunken brown lesions; leaves develop dark spots and may collapse. Pink spore masses can appear on infected tissue in wet weather.
Remove and destroy infected plants. Use clean, treated seed and avoid overhead watering. Space plants for airflow and rotate planting sites to reduce spore buildup.
Fungal leaf spot
Brown or purplish spots on the leaves, often ringed with a yellow halo, that spread and merge in warm, humid, or wet weather; heavily spotted leaves yellow and drop early.
Pick off spotted leaves and clear fallen debris to remove overwintering spores. Improve air circulation by thinning, and water at the base so foliage dries quickly. If it persists, apply a copper- or sulfur-based fungicide at the first sign.
Powdery mildew
White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.
Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.
Damping Off
Seedlings collapse at the soil line with thin, water-soaked stems; seeds may fail to emerge or rot before sprouting.
Sow in well-draining mix, avoid overwatering, and ensure good airflow. Remove affected seedlings and let the surface dry between waterings.
Crown Rot
Lower leaves yellow and wilt; the base of the rosette turns brown and soft, sometimes with white fungal threads at the soil line. Plants collapse in wet conditions.
Remove and destroy affected plants. Improve drainage and avoid overhead watering. Do not mulch directly against the crown. Space plants for airflow and avoid replanting in the same wet spot.
Fusarium wilt
Sudden wilting, brown streaks in stems, yellowing leaves. Affects sweet basil varieties most.
No cure. Remove and destroy plants. Do not replant in the same spot for 3+ years. Choose resistant varieties.
Aphids
Aphididae →Clusters of small soft insects on new growth and flower buds.
Knock off with a strong jet of water. Ladybirds and lacewings are natural predators. Insecticidal soap as last resort.
