Background

Nannyberry (Viburnum lentago) is a large native shrub or small tree found across eastern and central North America, from Manitoba south to Georgia. It delivers multi-season interest: flat-topped white clusters in late spring draw pollinators, dark green foliage turns burgundy-red in fall, and dense clusters of blue-black fruit persist into winter, providing high wildlife value through the coldest months.

Nannyberry is exceptionally cold-hardy to zone 2b and adapts well to clay soils, part shade, and moderate drought once established. It spreads by root suckers and can form dense colonies over time, making it well suited to naturalized hedgerows and wildlife thickets but worth monitoring in smaller gardens. Mulch the root zone at planting to retain moisture and reduce competition during establishment. It tolerates urban conditions and road salt better than most native shrubs of comparable size.

The ripe fruit is sweet and edible; Indigenous peoples across its range ate the berries fresh and dried them for winter stores. The heavy fruit yield, dense branching, and native provenance make nannyberry one of the most productive shrubs for birds and mammals in eastern and central North American gardens.

Common problems

Fungal leaf spot

Symptoms

Brown or purplish spots on the leaves, often ringed with a yellow halo, that spread and merge in warm, humid, or wet weather; heavily spotted leaves yellow and drop early.

Treatment

Pick off spotted leaves and clear fallen debris to remove overwintering spores. Improve air circulation by thinning, and water at the base so foliage dries quickly. If it persists, apply a copper- or sulfur-based fungicide at the first sign.

Powdery mildew

Symptoms

White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.

Treatment

Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.

Phytophthora Root Rot

Symptoms

Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.

Treatment

Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.

Armillaria Root Rot

Symptoms

Thinning, yellowing canopy with progressive dieback; white, fan-shaped mycelial mats visible beneath bark at or just below the soil line; honey-colored mushroom clusters appearing at the trunk base or on surface roots in autumn.

Treatment

No chemical cure exists. Improve drainage and avoid any injury to roots or trunk. Remove severely infected trees along with as much root material as possible. Do not replant susceptible species in the same spot.
