Background

Abutilon palmeri is a fast-growing, drought-tolerant shrub native to the Sonoran Desert region of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. It produces small, five-petaled yellow-orange flowers over a long season and fits naturally into low-water and wildlife gardens.

It thrives in full sun and well-drained, lean soil; rich or heavy soil encourages rank, open growth. In frost-free zones it behaves as an evergreen and can reach 6 feet; light frost will knock it back, but established plants resprout reliably from the base. Mulching the root zone extends performance into cooler parts of zone 8. The velvety, palmate leaves and long flowering period attract hummingbirds and native bees.

Like other members of the mallow family, the plant contains mucilaginous compounds. Various Abutilon species carry a documented history of traditional use as emollients and for fever and respiratory complaints.

Common problems

Powdery mildew

Symptoms

White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.

Treatment

Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.

Rust

Symptoms

Orange to brown raised pustules on the undersides of leaves, with yellow spotting on the upper surface. Heavy infections cause leaves to yellow and drop.

Treatment

Remove and destroy infected leaves. Avoid overhead watering and improve air circulation. Apply a sulfur or copper-based fungicide if it spreads. Clear plant debris in fall.

Phytophthora Root Rot

Symptoms

Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.

Treatment

Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.

Sooty Mold (Scale-Associated)

Symptoms

Black, powdery or crusty coating on upper leaf surfaces and stems. Affected leaves may yellow and drop in severe cases. The mold grows on honeydew secreted by scale insects, mealybugs, or aphids feeding on the plant.

Treatment

Control the underlying pest infestation first using horticultural oil or neem oil applied thoroughly to stems and leaf undersides. Once pest populations are reduced, sooty mold stops spreading and weathers away over time. Rinse foliage with a strong stream of water to dislodge existing mold deposits.
