Background

Catalina Cherry is a large evergreen shrub or small tree native to California's Channel Islands, primarily Catalina and Santa Cruz islands. In gardens it functions as a dense privacy screen, windbreak, or specimen plant and ranks among the most reliable large-growing California natives for Southern California's Mediterranean climate.

Once established, it requires little to no supplemental water and tolerates the prolonged dry summers that defeat many plants. It performs best in fast-draining, low-fertility soils; heavy clay or continuously moist ground promotes root disease and rapid decline. Pruning to a single leader produces a tidy small tree; left unpruned it forms a broad multi-stemmed shrub. It tolerates coastal wind and is considered moderately fire-resistant in a managed landscape. In the cooler, frost-prone end of zone 8, siting against a south-facing wall provides useful cold protection.

The thin, dark-red to near-black flesh of the fruit is sweet and edible fresh. Chumash and other Channel Islands peoples also processed the large seeds—which contain cyanogenic glycosides and are toxic raw—by leaching and grinding them into a flour comparable to acorn meal. Ripe fruit is taken rapidly by birds and other wildlife in fall.

Common problems

Powdery mildew

Symptoms

White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.

Treatment

Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.

Phytophthora Root Rot

Symptoms

Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.

Treatment

Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.

Armillaria Root Rot

Symptoms

Thinning, yellowing canopy with progressive dieback; white, fan-shaped mycelial mats visible beneath bark at or just below the soil line; honey-colored mushroom clusters appearing at the trunk base or on surface roots in autumn.

Treatment

No chemical cure exists. Improve drainage and avoid any injury to roots or trunk. Remove severely infected trees along with as much root material as possible. Do not replant susceptible species in the same spot.

Shot Hole Disease

Symptoms

Small reddish-purple spots on leaves that dry out and drop, leaving ragged holes across the leaf surface. Severe infections cause early defoliation. Dark sunken lesions may appear on young stems.

Treatment

Remove and dispose of infected leaves and stems. Avoid overhead irrigation and wetting foliage. Apply a copper-based fungicide in fall just before seasonal rains begin; repeat in early spring if the previous season was severe. Ensure good air circulation through selective pruning.
