Purple needlegrass (Nassella pulchra) is a perennial bunchgrass native to California and Baja California and recognized as California's official state grass. Before European settlement, it dominated millions of acres of coastal hills, Central Valley lowlands, and Sierra Nevada foothills. Gardeners use it in native plant and low-water landscapes, habitat restoration projects, and erosion control on dry slopes.
The grass forms upright tussocks 2–4 ft tall with narrow arching leaves and purple-tinged seed heads in spring. Its root system can reach 20 ft deep, improving soil structure and water infiltration well beyond what most ornamental grasses achieve. Plant seed or container stock in fall to align with California's rainy season; established plants require little or no supplemental irrigation. Tolerates clay, loam, and rocky soils but not prolonged waterlogging. Cut clumps back hard in late winter before new growth begins. pH around 6.5–7.5 suits it well.
Seeds were gathered by multiple California Native American groups, including the Chumash and Yokuts, then ground into flour and eaten as pinole. The sharp, hygroscopic awns on the seeds are mechanically adapted for self-burial in soil, which improves natural germination rates.
Rust
Orange to brown raised pustules on the undersides of leaves, with yellow spotting on the upper surface. Heavy infections cause leaves to yellow and drop.
Remove and destroy infected leaves. Avoid overhead watering and improve air circulation. Apply a sulfur or copper-based fungicide if it spreads. Clear plant debris in fall.
Helminthosporium Leaf Spot
Small oval to elongated tan or brown lesions with reddish-purple borders appear on leaf blades and sheaths. In severe cases, blades yellow and die back from the tip downward.
Remove and dispose of heavily infected foliage. Avoid overhead irrigation and improve air circulation by thinning dense plantings. Fungicide applications are rarely warranted on established native grasses; correcting site conditions — spacing, drainage, and fertility — is the primary control.
