Celery (Apium graveolens) is a cool-season biennial grown as an annual vegetable, valued for its crisp stalks, aromatic leaves, and pungent seeds. It demands more effort than most vegetables—long indoor lead time, consistent fertility, and steady moisture—but the payoff is a versatile crop used raw, braised, juiced, and as a stock base.
Plants perform best between 60–70°F; sustained heat produces stringy, bitter stalks, while prolonged cold after establishment can trigger bolting. In most climates celery is started indoors 10–12 weeks before the last frost and transplanted in spring, or started in midsummer for a fall harvest. Consistent watering is non-negotiable—uneven moisture causes hollow, pithy stalks and cracked stems. Mulching deeply moderates soil temperature and reduces moisture loss. Target soil pH of 6.0–7.0. Self-blanching varieties reduce bitterness without hilling; traditional varieties are earthed up or wrapped to achieve the same effect.
Celery seed and leaf have documented use in traditional Ayurvedic and European herbal medicine. The plant contains phthalides, compounds studied for mild antihypertensive activity. Seeds function as a culinary spice and carry diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties in traditional practice. Damping Off

Root-Knot Nematode
Swollen galls on roots, poor vigor, wilting in heat, and reduced fruiting. Containers and sandy soils are more prone.
Use clean potting mix in containers. Avoid replanting in infested soil. Maintain plant vigor with mulch and steady watering. Solarize affected garden soil.
Mosaic virus
Yellowing, mottled, or distorted leaves. No cure — spread by aphids.

Aster Yellows
Deformed, greenish flowers, stunted growth, and yellowed foliage. Flower centers may produce tufts of leafy growth instead of normal petals.

Septoria Leaf Spot
Small tan to brown spots with dark borders on leaves, often with tiny black specks at the center. Spots merge and lower leaves yellow and die.

Cercospora Leaf Spot
