Washingtonia filifera is the only palm native to California and one of two North American Washingtonia species. It produces a stout columnar trunk topped by a crown of large palmate fronds with distinctive white fibrous threads along the leaf margins—the source of its alternate name, cotton palm. It anchors natural oasis communities in the Colorado and Sonoran deserts and serves as a high-impact specimen tree in hot, dry landscapes.
This palm is extremely drought tolerant once established but naturally occurs near desert springs and seeps, so supplemental irrigation speeds early establishment. Dead fronds persist and drape down the trunk to form a dense skirt that provides nesting habitat for hooded orioles and other cavity-nesting birds; this skirt is often removed in managed landscapes for fire safety. Growth is slow to moderate, and trees are long-lived—some native grove specimens are estimated at several hundred years old. Prefers alkaline or neutral, fast-draining soils and performs poorly in heavy clay or poorly aerated ground.
Cahuilla, Serrano, and other indigenous peoples of the desert Southwest used this palm extensively. The small date-like fruits were eaten fresh, dried, or ground into flour for cakes and beverages, and the seeds were also milled into meal. Leaf fiber was woven into baskets, sandals, and cordage, and the leaf bases were used in shelter construction.
Ganoderma Butt Rot
White rot of heartwood at the base and lower trunk. Large, hard, shelf-like bracket fungi with a shiny reddish-brown upper surface and cream-colored pore surface appear at or near the soil line. Infected trees lose structural integrity with little visible external warning until failure.
No effective chemical treatment once established. Remove and destroy conks before they release spores. Have a certified arborist assess structural risk; removal is often required for trees near structures or high-traffic areas. Prevent infection by avoiding root collar wounds, reducing soil compaction, and maintaining tree health.
Texas Root Rot
Sudden wilting of branches or the entire canopy, often following a wet period. White cottony fungal mats develop on infected roots. Wood at the crown appears dark and water-soaked. Decline can progress to tree death within weeks.
No effective chemical cure exists. Ensure excellent drainage and avoid overwatering. Remove and destroy all infected plant material. Avoid replanting susceptible species in the same soil for several years.
Palm Pink Rot
Water-soaked, darkening lesions at petiole bases and on lower fronds; pink to salmon-colored spore masses develop on affected tissue; fronds collapse and hang without detaching cleanly.
Cut out and dispose of infected fronds and petiole tissue. Avoid overhead irrigation and any practice that keeps the crown wet. Improve soil drainage around the trunk. Apply copper-based fungicide to the crown and petiole bases at first sign of infection and repeat every 2–3 weeks while warm, humid conditions persist.
Graphiola Leaf Spot (False Smut)
Small, hard, dark brown to black wart-like pustules erupt from both surfaces of fronds, often ringed by yellow halos. Heavily infected fronds yellow and die back prematurely.
Remove and destroy heavily infected fronds. Improve air circulation around the crown by pruning adjacent vegetation. Apply copper-based fungicide in spring as new growth emerges and repeat monthly through the growing season if infection pressure remains high.
