California Bay is a large native evergreen hardwood in the laurel family, endemic to coastal California, the Sierra foothills, and southwestern Oregon. Its glossy lance-shaped leaves produce a volatile, camphor-tinged aroma considerably more intense than Mediterranean bay laurel. Gardeners plant it as a shade tree, woodland screen, or multi-stemmed large shrub depending on site conditions.
In mixed evergreen and riparian forests it can exceed 60 ft, developing a broad dense crown in open settings. It tolerates moderate drought once established but grows faster with deep, infrequent summer irrigation. In dry or wind-exposed sites it stays low and multi-stemmed naturally. Leaves decompose slowly and suppress competing understory plants. Apply a 3–4 in layer of wood-chip mulch over the root zone at planting, kept clear of the trunk base. California Bay is a primary asymptomatic reservoir host for Phytophthora ramorum; siting it near native oaks warrants monitoring during wet winters.
Leaves are used as a culinary bay substitute, considerably more potent than true bay laurel — roughly half the quantity suffices in standard recipes. California Indigenous peoples roasted the oily nuts and ground them into meal. Crushed leaves were applied externally for headaches, rheumatism, and as an insect repellent across multiple tribal traditions.
Sudden Oak Death
Reddish-brown to black bleeding cankers on the lower trunk ooze dark sap; inner bark beneath the canker is stained deep red-brown. Foliage may wilt and die rapidly as the canker girdles the stem. Leaf lesions occur on some hosts but are secondary on oaks.
No systemic cure is available once infection is established. Preventive trunk injections with potassium phosphite applied before infection can slow canker progression in high-risk areas. Remove and chip or burn infected wood on-site; do not transport infected material off the property. Report confirmed or suspected cases to the California Department of Food and Agriculture.
Phytophthora Root Rot
Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.
Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.
Armillaria Root Rot
Thinning, yellowing canopy with progressive dieback; white, fan-shaped mycelial mats visible beneath bark at or just below the soil line; honey-colored mushroom clusters appearing at the trunk base or on surface roots in autumn.
No chemical cure exists. Improve drainage and avoid any injury to roots or trunk. Remove severely infected trees along with as much root material as possible. Do not replant susceptible species in the same spot.
Sooty Mold (Scale-Associated)
Black, powdery or crusty coating on upper leaf surfaces and stems. Affected leaves may yellow and drop in severe cases. The mold grows on honeydew secreted by scale insects, mealybugs, or aphids feeding on the plant.
Control the underlying pest infestation first using horticultural oil or neem oil applied thoroughly to stems and leaf undersides. Once pest populations are reduced, sooty mold stops spreading and weathers away over time. Rinse foliage with a strong stream of water to dislodge existing mold deposits.
