Carpenteria californica is a rare evergreen shrub endemic to a narrow band of Sierra Nevada foothill terrain in Fresno County, California. In cultivation it functions as a structural garden shrub, producing large, fragrant white flowers with prominent golden stamens in late spring and early summer over glossy dark green foliage.

The species thrives in fast-draining soils on dry, sunny slopes and becomes highly drought-tolerant once established. Overwatering is the most common cause of decline; plants in poorly drained or clay-heavy soils with supplemental summer irrigation tend to be short-lived. Good air circulation reduces powdery mildew pressure. Established plants reach 6–10 ft and need only light shaping after flowering. It performs well on dry slopes and in mixed California native plantings.

Carpenteria californica holds rare status in the wild due to its extremely restricted natural range. Growing it in cultivation supports broader awareness of California's endemic flora, and it has received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit for its ornamental reliability in suitable climates.

Powdery mildew
