Background

Bigberry manzanita is a large chaparral shrub or small tree native to the coastal and inland hills of California and Baja California. It has smooth, polished mahogany-red bark, glaucous blue-green leaves, and clusters of white to pale-pink urn-shaped flowers that open in late winter. Its berries are notably larger than those of most other manzanita species, making it a high-value food source for bears, coyotes, deer, and many bird species. In October 2025 it was designated California's State Shrub.

Once established, bigberry manzanita requires no supplemental irrigation in its native range and declines quickly in clay soils or regularly irrigated beds. It thrives in fast-draining, low-fertility, slightly acidic soils. The species is fire-adapted: mature plants resprout from a woody burl after fire, and seeds germinate in response to smoke and heat cues. Plant container-grown stock in fall to leverage winter rains for root establishment before summer drought sets in. Avoid amending the soil or adding fertilizer.

Native California peoples including the Chumash used the sticky brown berries fresh, dried, or brewed into a fermented cider. Leaves were applied as a poultice for skin inflammation and used in preparations for urinary complaints.

Common problems

Leaf gall

Symptoms

Leaves, buds, or young shoots thicken into pale green, reddish, or whitish fleshy galls that later turn white with a powdery spore bloom before browning.

Treatment

Pick off and destroy galls before they turn white and shed spores. Improve air circulation and avoid overhead watering in spring. The damage is largely cosmetic and rarely needs fungicide.

Phytophthora Root Rot

Symptoms

Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.

Treatment

Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.

Armillaria Root Rot

Symptoms

Thinning, yellowing canopy with progressive dieback; white, fan-shaped mycelial mats visible beneath bark at or just below the soil line; honey-colored mushroom clusters appearing at the trunk base or on surface roots in autumn.

Treatment

No chemical cure exists. Improve drainage and avoid any injury to roots or trunk. Remove severely infected trees along with as much root material as possible. Do not replant susceptible species in the same spot.

Sudden Oak Death

Symptoms

Reddish-brown to black bleeding cankers on the lower trunk ooze dark sap; inner bark beneath the canker is stained deep red-brown. Foliage may wilt and die rapidly as the canker girdles the stem. Leaf lesions occur on some hosts but are secondary on oaks.

Treatment

No systemic cure is available once infection is established. Preventive trunk injections with potassium phosphite applied before infection can slow canker progression in high-risk areas. Remove and chip or burn infected wood on-site; do not transport infected material off the property. Report confirmed or suspected cases to the California Department of Food and Agriculture.
