Background

Carmel Creeper is a prostrate form of Ceanothus griseus native to coastal bluffs near Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. Evergreen and dense, it stays 1–2 feet tall while spreading 5–8 feet wide, making it effective for slope stabilization, erosion control, and weed suppression. Clusters of blue to violet flowers appear from late winter through spring and draw native bees and other pollinators.

It thrives in fast-draining, low-fertility soils and becomes highly drought-tolerant once established. Summer irrigation is the leading cause of early plant death; watering should be phased out after the first or second growing season except during extreme drought. Clay and poorly drained soils cause fatal root rot. A soil pH of 6.0–7.0 is preferred, and no fertilizer is needed — supplemental nitrogen encourages soft, disease-prone growth. Mulch should not be piled against the crown.

Like other Ceanothus species, Carmel Creeper fixes atmospheric nitrogen through root associations with Frankia bacteria, gradually building soil fertility beneath its mat. It serves as a larval host for several native butterfly species and provides nesting cover for ground-foraging birds.

Root rot

Plants wilt, yellow, and stunt even in moist soil; lower stems and roots turn brown, soft, and mushy and the plant may collapse. Most common in heavy, wet, or poorly drained ground.

Treatment

Improve drainage and stop overwatering, and never plant too deep. Lift and destroy badly affected plants along with the soil around the roots. Grow in raised or free-draining beds to prevent it returning.

Phytophthora Root Rot

Symptoms

Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.

Treatment

Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.

Powdery mildew

Symptoms

White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.

Treatment

Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.
