Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is a frost-tender annual vine native to the Kalahari region of Africa. It produces large, sweet fruit ranging from a few pounds to over 30 pounds depending on variety. More than 1,000 cultivars exist, including compact bush types for small gardens, yellow- and orange-fleshed varieties, and seedless hybrids widely available to home growers.
Watermelon requires a long, warm growing season of 70–100 days and a soil temperature of at least 70°F at planting. In short-season climates, start transplants indoors in biodegradable pots 3–4 weeks before the last frost date and lay black plastic mulch 1–2 weeks early to warm the soil. Vines sprawl 6–10 feet; allow room or trellis small-fruited varieties. Ideal soil pH is 6.0–6.8. Reducing irrigation once fruit reaches full size concentrates sugars in the flesh. Waterlogged soils strongly favor fusarium wilt and phytophthora root rot, so drainage is critical.
The flesh and rind contain citrulline, an amino acid involved in nitric oxide production and studied for cardiovascular and blood pressure effects. Red-fleshed varieties are among the richest dietary sources of lycopene. The rind is used in pickles and stir-fries in African and Asian culinary traditions; seeds are roasted and eaten as a snack throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
Fusarium wilt
Sudden wilting, brown streaks in stems, yellowing leaves. Affects sweet basil varieties most.
No cure. Remove and destroy plants. Do not replant in the same spot for 3+ years. Choose resistant varieties.
Powdery mildew
White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.
Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.
Downy mildew
Yellowing on top of leaves with grey-purple fuzz underneath. Spreads rapidly in humid conditions.
Remove affected leaves. Improve air circulation. Avoid overhead watering. Copper spray as preventive.
Bacterial Wilt
Individual leaves wilt and dry while still green, progressing to whole-plant collapse. Cut stems ooze a sticky, stringy sap.
Spread by cucumber beetles. Control beetles with row covers until bloom and remove infected plants promptly. No cure once infected; rotate crops and remove plant debris.
Pepper Anthracnose Fruit Rot
Sunken, circular lesions on ripening fruit with concentric rings and pink or black spore masses in the center. Spreads quickly in warm, wet weather.
Remove and destroy infected fruit. Avoid overhead watering and improve airflow with proper spacing. Rotate away from peppers and tomatoes for 2–3 years. Use disease-free seed and apply copper-based fungicide preventively in wet seasons.
Angular Leaf Spot
Small water-soaked spots on leaves that turn brown and angular, bounded by leaf veins. Spots may dry and drop out, leaving holes. Fruit can develop small sunken lesions.
Avoid overhead watering and working among wet plants. Remove infected leaves, rotate crops on a 2–3 year cycle, and use copper-based sprays if the disease spreads.
Mosaic virus
Yellowing, mottled, or distorted leaves. No cure — spread by aphids.
Remove and destroy infected plants. Control aphid populations to prevent spread. Do not propagate from infected tubers.
Root-Knot Nematode
Swollen galls on roots, poor vigor, wilting in heat, and reduced fruiting. Containers and sandy soils are more prone.
Use clean potting mix in containers. Avoid replanting in infested soil. Maintain plant vigor with mulch and steady watering. Solarize affected garden soil.
Phytophthora Root Rot
Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.
Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.
Damping Off
Seedlings collapse at the soil line with thin, water-soaked stems; seeds may fail to emerge or rot before sprouting.
Sow in well-draining mix, avoid overwatering, and ensure good airflow. Remove affected seedlings and let the surface dry between waterings.
Gummy Stem Blight
Water-soaked lesions on stems that ooze a sticky, amber-brown gum. Leaves develop tan to brown circular spots with dark margins. Severe infections cause vine collapse and sunken, rotting areas on fruit.
Remove and destroy infected plant material promptly. Apply copper-based or chlorothalonil fungicide preventively during wet stretches. Avoid overhead irrigation. Use disease-free seed and rotate cucurbits out of affected beds for at least 2 years.
Cucumber Beetle
Acalymma vittatum →Irregular feeding scars on leaves, stems, and fruit rind from small yellow-green beetles with black stripes or spots. At low populations, damage is minor; the primary harm is vectoring bacterial wilt, which causes rapid, irreversible vine collapse.
Use row covers from planting until flowering to exclude beetles. Apply kaolin clay to exposed plants as a physical deterrent. Hand-pick adults from vine bases. Use pyrethrin or neem oil for heavy infestations. Destroy wilting vines immediately to prevent further disease spread.
