Potato is a starchy tuberous vegetable native to the Andes of South America, domesticated over 7,000 years ago and now one of the world's four major staple crops. It belongs to the nightshade family and produces edible underground stem tubers that are a significant source of carbohydrates, potassium, and vitamin C. Most garden varieties are grown as annuals, though the species is technically a perennial in frost-free climates.
Tubers form best when soil temperatures are between 60–70°F, making potatoes a cool-season crop planted in early spring or, in warm climates, as a fall or winter crop. Always start from certified disease-free seed potatoes rather than grocery-store tubers, which carry disease risk. Hilling — mounding soil up around stems as plants grow — is essential to prevent greening from light exposure and to maximize yield. Soil pH between 5.0 and 5.5 suppresses common scab; adding lime or fresh manure raises pH and increases disease pressure. Rotate potatoes out of any bed where tomatoes, peppers, or eggplant were grown for at least three years.
Raw potato juice has a documented history in folk medicine as a remedy for gastric ulcers and acid reflux. Potatoes contain resistant starch that functions as a prebiotic in the gut. Historically, their vitamin C content was nutritionally critical, helping prevent scurvy in populations with limited access to fresh produce during long winters or sea voyages.
Early Blight
Dark brown spots with concentric rings on older lower leaves, surrounded by yellowing. Leaves drop, exposing fruit to sunscald.
Remove affected leaves, mulch to block soil splash, water at the base, and rotate crops. Apply copper or chlorothalonil fungicide if it spreads.
Mosaic virus
Yellowing, mottled, or distorted leaves. No cure — spread by aphids.
Remove and destroy infected plants. Control aphid populations to prevent spread. Do not propagate from infected tubers.
Verticillium Wilt
Lower leaves yellow and wilt, often on one side of the plant, with brown streaking in the stem and crown tissue when cut open. Plants are stunted and decline over the season.
Remove and destroy affected plants. Avoid planting in soil that has grown infected tomatoes, peppers, or other susceptible crops. Rotate beds and improve drainage; there is no cure once a plant is infected.
Fusarium wilt
Sudden wilting, brown streaks in stems, yellowing leaves. Affects sweet basil varieties most.
No cure. Remove and destroy plants. Do not replant in the same spot for 3+ years. Choose resistant varieties.
Root-Knot Nematode
Swollen galls on roots, poor vigor, wilting in heat, and reduced fruiting. Containers and sandy soils are more prone.
Use clean potting mix in containers. Avoid replanting in infested soil. Maintain plant vigor with mulch and steady watering. Solarize affected garden soil.
Damping Off
Seedlings collapse at the soil line with thin, water-soaked stems; seeds may fail to emerge or rot before sprouting.
Sow in well-draining mix, avoid overwatering, and ensure good airflow. Remove affected seedlings and let the surface dry between waterings.
Late Blight
Dark, water-soaked lesions expand rapidly on leaves and stems, often with a pale yellow border. White mold forms on leaf undersides during humid conditions. Infected tubers show reddish-brown dry rot just beneath the skin that can extend deep into the flesh.
Remove and bag all affected plant material immediately — do not compost. Apply copper-based fungicide preventively when overnight temperatures drop below 65°F with sustained leaf wetness. Avoid overhead irrigation. Use certified disease-free seed potatoes and plant resistant varieties. Do not save tubers from infected plants for replanting.
Common Scab
Rough, corky, raised or pitted lesions on the tuber surface ranging from small specks to large irregular patches. Foliage is not affected. Infected tubers are edible but store poorly and suffer cosmetic rejection.
Maintain soil pH at 5.0–5.2 to suppress the Streptomyces bacteria responsible. Avoid liming beds before planting and do not add fresh manure in the season of planting. Keep soil consistently moist during tuber initiation (the 6 weeks after emergence). Rotate potatoes on a 3–4 year cycle and choose scab-resistant varieties such as Russet Burbank or Yukon Gold.
Black Leg
Stem base blackens and rots at or just below the soil line, causing plants to yellow, wilt, and collapse. Infected tubers develop a slimy, foul-smelling internal rot. Disease spreads through contaminated seed pieces and is worsened by waterlogged soils.
Plant only certified seed potatoes and ensure all cut surfaces are fully cured before planting. Avoid planting in poorly drained or compacted soils. Remove and destroy infected plants and any associated tubers. No curative chemical treatment exists; prevention through clean planting material, proper drainage, and crop rotation of 3 or more years is the primary strategy.
Colorado Potato Beetle
Leptinotarsa decemlineata →Yellow-orange eggs in clusters on leaf undersides. Orange larvae with black spots and adult yellow-and-black-striped beetles feed heavily on foliage, rapidly skeletonizing leaves and stunting young plants. Defoliation can be severe enough to eliminate fruit production.
Hand-pick egg masses, larvae, and adults into soapy water daily during peak emergence. Apply spinosad or Bacillus thuringiensis var. tenebrionis (Bt-t) targeting early larval instars. Use row cover over transplants until flowering. Rotate nightshade crops to new locations each year to disrupt overwintering beetle populations.
Aphids
Aphididae →Clusters of small soft insects on new growth and flower buds.
Knock off with a strong jet of water. Ladybirds and lacewings are natural predators. Insecticidal soap as last resort.
