Pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo) is a warm-season annual grown for its large, edible fruit, seeds, and foliage. It shares the same species as many summer squashes and encompasses cultivars ranging from small pie types to giant carving varieties. For gardeners it delivers high yield per plant and serves dual purposes as a food crop and autumn ornamental.
Pumpkins require warm soil (minimum 60°F), a frost-free window of 75–100 days, and substantial space. Vining types spread 10–20 feet and can be directed along fences or into unused areas to reduce crowding. Planting in raised hills improves drainage and concentrates soil heat. Consistent moisture during fruit set is critical; fluctuations cause cracking and poor fruit development. Curing harvested fruit at 80–85°F for 10 days toughens the rind and extends shelf life to several months. A soil pH of 6.0–6.8 suits most cultivars. Plants are cold-sensitive and must not be set out until all frost risk has passed.
Pumpkin seeds contain cucurbitin, a compound with traditional and documented anthelmintic use against intestinal parasites. Seed oil has clinical support for managing benign prostatic hyperplasia symptoms and urinary urgency. Both flesh and seeds are culinary staples across North American, European, and South Asian cuisines.
Powdery mildew
White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.

Downy mildew
Yellowing on top of leaves with grey-purple fuzz underneath. Spreads rapidly in humid conditions.

Bacterial Wilt
Individual leaves wilt and dry while still green, progressing to whole-plant collapse. Cut stems ooze a sticky, stringy sap.
Spread by cucumber beetles. Control beetles with row covers until bloom and remove infected plants promptly. No cure once infected; rotate crops and remove plant debris.
Mosaic virus
Yellowing, mottled, or distorted leaves. No cure — spread by aphids.
Remove and destroy infected plants. Control aphid populations to prevent spread. Do not propagate from infected tubers.
Angular Leaf Spot
Small water-soaked spots on leaves that turn brown and angular, bounded by leaf veins. Spots may dry and drop out, leaving holes. Fruit can develop small sunken lesions.
Avoid overhead watering and working among wet plants. Remove infected leaves, rotate crops on a 2–3 year cycle, and use copper-based sprays if the disease spreads.
Phytophthora Root Rot
Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.
Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.
Gummy Stem Blight
Water-soaked lesions on stems that ooze a sticky, amber-brown gum. Leaves develop tan to brown circular spots with dark margins. Severe infections cause vine collapse and sunken, rotting areas on fruit.
Remove and destroy infected plant material promptly. Apply copper-based or chlorothalonil fungicide preventively during wet stretches. Avoid overhead irrigation. Use disease-free seed and rotate cucurbits out of affected beds for at least 2 years.
Damping Off
Seedlings collapse at the soil line with thin, water-soaked stems; seeds may fail to emerge or rot before sprouting.
Sow in well-draining mix, avoid overwatering, and ensure good airflow. Remove affected seedlings and let the surface dry between waterings.
Plectosporium Blight
White to tan diamond-shaped or oval lesions on stems, petioles, and fruit surface. Stem lesions can girdle and kill the vine. Fruit develops white surface scars that may crack and allow secondary rot.
Remove and destroy infected tissue promptly. Avoid overhead irrigation. Apply preventive fungicide sprays containing chlorothalonil or azoxystrobin during wet weather. Rotate cucurbits out of affected beds for at least 2 years.
Squash Vine Borer
Melittia cucurbitae →Sudden wilting of vines, sawdust-like frass near holes at the base of stems, and hollowed or rotted stem interiors.
Wrap stem bases with foil or use floating row covers until flowering. Slit affected stems to remove larvae, then bury the wound with soil. Remove and destroy infested vines at season end.
Squash Bug

Crush egg masses by hand, trap adults under boards at night, and remove debris where they overwinter. Treat heavy infestations on young plants with insecticidal soap targeting nymphs.
Cucumber Beetle
Acalymma vittatum →Irregular feeding scars on leaves, stems, and fruit rind from small yellow-green beetles with black stripes or spots. At low populations, damage is minor; the primary harm is vectoring bacterial wilt, which causes rapid, irreversible vine collapse.
Use row covers from planting until flowering to exclude beetles. Apply kaolin clay to exposed plants as a physical deterrent. Hand-pick adults from vine bases. Use pyrethrin or neem oil for heavy infestations. Destroy wilting vines immediately to prevent further disease spread.
