Rhus integrifolia is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to coastal chaparral and sage scrub from Santa Barbara County south through San Diego County, including the Channel Islands and coastal Baja California. It grows on dry slopes, canyon edges, and coastal bluffs, producing clusters of small pinkish flowers in late winter to spring followed by sticky, tart red berries that persist into fall. Gardeners in mild coastal climates use it as a dense screen, informal hedge, or slope-stabilizer, and the berries reliably attract mockingbirds, thrushes, and cedar waxwings.

Once established, lemonade berry needs little to no supplemental water and tolerates lean, fast-draining soils including coastal sand and degraded clay. It handles salt-laden wind and resists deer browsing. The plant belongs to Anacardiaceae — the same family as poison oak — and the sap can cause contact dermatitis in individuals sensitive to urushiol-related compounds; wear gloves when pruning. Left unpruned, plants can grow into multi-stemmed small trees reaching 15–25 ft in ideal conditions; regular shaping keeps them in shrub form.

Chumash and other California indigenous peoples soaked ripe berries in cold water to produce a tart, refreshing drink — the direct origin of the common name. The berries carry malic and citric acids and can still be used this way. Bark decoctions are recorded in ethnobotanical literature as a traditional remedy for colds and coughs.

Common problems

Phytophthora Root Rot

Symptoms

Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.

Treatment

Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.

Powdery mildew

Symptoms

White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.

Treatment

Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.

Verticillium Wilt

Symptoms

Lower leaves yellow and wilt, often on one side of the plant, with brown streaking in the stem and crown tissue when cut open. Plants are stunted and decline over the season.

Treatment

Remove and destroy affected plants. Avoid planting in soil that has grown infected tomatoes, peppers, or other susceptible crops. Rotate beds and improve drainage; there is no cure once a plant is infected.
