Bladderpod (Cleomella arborea, formerly Isomeris arborea) is an evergreen California native shrub of coastal sage scrub, chaparral margins, and desert washes. Bright yellow flowers are produced nearly year-round in mild climates, followed by inflated, bladder-like seed pods that persist on the plant and give it its distinctive silhouette. Foliage carries a sharp, pungent odor that discourages deer and rabbit browsing.
The plant is extremely drought tolerant once established and performs best in fast-draining, low-fertility soils with little to no supplemental irrigation after the first season. Heavy clay or waterlogged ground causes rapid decline. It naturalizes well on gravelly slopes, dry roadsides, and in low-water garden designs. Fall planting allows roots to establish during the cool, moist season before summer drought. Bladderpod is a consistent nectar source for native bees, carpenter bees, and hummingbirds across its entire blooming period.
Cahuilla and other California indigenous peoples applied leaf poultices to treat minor wounds and skin ailments. As a member of Cleomaceae, the plant contains glucosinolates, the same compound class responsible for its pungent foliar scent.
Powdery mildew
White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.
Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.
Phytophthora Root Rot
Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.
Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.
Texas Root Rot
Sudden wilting of branches or the entire canopy, often following a wet period. White cottony fungal mats develop on infected roots. Wood at the crown appears dark and water-soaked. Decline can progress to tree death within weeks.
No effective chemical cure exists. Ensure excellent drainage and avoid overwatering. Remove and destroy all infected plant material. Avoid replanting susceptible species in the same soil for several years.
