Western sycamore is the largest native tree in California, commonly reaching 50–100 ft along stream corridors, canyon bottoms, and floodplains from the Central Valley to coastal drainages and into Baja California. Its exfoliating bark — a mosaic of cream, tan, and gray — is among the most visually distinctive of any western North American tree, and old specimens develop massive, contorted limbs with broad spreading canopies.
A riparian specialist in the wild, this tree grows fastest when roots can reach a permanent water table, but established specimens tolerate summer drought better than expected once deeply rooted. It frequently produces basal sprouts and may develop multiple trunks. Prefers deep alluvial or loamy soils; will not thrive in shallow, compacted, or poorly drained ground. Plant only where there is ample horizontal space — mature canopy spread commonly reaches 40–70 ft. Cold-hardiness is adequate through zone 7a; trees in the inland valleys of its native range handle brief freezes without damage.
Western sycamore is a keystone riparian species, providing cavity-nesting sites for woodpeckers, raptors, and songbirds, and contributing leaf litter that supports aquatic invertebrate communities. It is widely specified in California stream-corridor restoration and erosion-stabilization projects.
Sycamore Anthracnose
Brown, irregular lesions form along leaf veins and midribs shortly after budbreak; infected shoots die back with leaves often clinging to the branch through summer. Repeated infections produce a witches'-broom of short, distorted shoots clustered near main limbs.
Rake and dispose of fallen leaves and blighted shoot tips each fall to reduce overwintering inoculum. Apply a copper-based fungicide at budbreak if a cool, wet spring is forecast. Selectively thin the crown to improve air circulation. Trees typically push healthy new growth once temperatures rise and conditions dry; severe defoliation rarely kills established specimens but repeated annual infection weakens them over time.
Powdery mildew
White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.
Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.
Armillaria Root Rot
Thinning, yellowing canopy with progressive dieback; white, fan-shaped mycelial mats visible beneath bark at or just below the soil line; honey-colored mushroom clusters appearing at the trunk base or on surface roots in autumn.
No chemical cure exists. Improve drainage and avoid any injury to roots or trunk. Remove severely infected trees along with as much root material as possible. Do not replant susceptible species in the same spot.
Bacterial Leaf Scorch
Browning at leaf margins progresses inward, often with a yellow or reddish border between healthy and necrotic tissue. Symptoms first appear on older leaves in late summer and worsen each subsequent year as the pathogen spreads through the xylem.
No cure exists. Prune affected branches, maintain tree vigor with deep watering and a wide mulch ring, and manage sharpshooter leafhopper populations where feasible. Oxytetracycline trunk injections by a licensed arborist may suppress symptoms temporarily but do not eliminate Xylella fastidiosa.
