Tecate cypress is one of the rarest conifers in North America, native to a small number of disjunct populations in San Diego County, the Santa Ana Mountains of Orange County, and adjacent northern Baja California. It grows as a small to medium evergreen tree with scaly reddish-brown bark and grayish-green scale-like foliage, forming dense stands on dry, rocky chaparral slopes at low to mid elevations.
The species is fire-adapted: its cones are serotinous, remaining sealed on the tree for years and opening only in response to fire heat, releasing seeds onto freshly cleared, mineral-rich soil. In cultivation it is highly drought-tolerant once established and fits well in native or Mediterranean-climate gardens. It demands sharp drainage and lean, dry soil; overwatering or heavy clay causes rapid decline. Established trees require virtually no supplemental irrigation in Southern California. Planted in fall, trees can root into cool, moist soil before the dry season begins.
Wild populations are considered vulnerable due to the species' extremely limited range and susceptibility to Seiridium canker and Phytophthora root rot under stressed conditions. Using nursery-grown stock from local seed sources supports genetic conservation of this rare tree and is preferred over collecting from wild stands.
Seiridium Canker
Elongated, sunken cankers on branches or trunk with heavy amber to brown resin exudate. Foliage above the canker turns yellow then brown and dies. Multiple cankers can girdle a branch or stem completely.
Prune infected branches 6–8 inches below the visible canker margin and dispose of material off-site. Sterilize tools with 70% isopropyl alcohol between every cut. No curative fungicide is available; focus on reducing tree stress through proper site selection, avoiding overhead irrigation, and ensuring good soil drainage.
Phytophthora Root Rot
Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.
Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.
Armillaria Root Rot
Thinning, yellowing canopy with progressive dieback; white, fan-shaped mycelial mats visible beneath bark at or just below the soil line; honey-colored mushroom clusters appearing at the trunk base or on surface roots in autumn.
No chemical cure exists. Improve drainage and avoid any injury to roots or trunk. Remove severely infected trees along with as much root material as possible. Do not replant susceptible species in the same spot.
