Background

This dwarf New Zealand flax is grown almost entirely for its foliage — stiff, sword-like leaves held in a tight architectural fan, useful as an evergreen anchor in a border or a striking container specimen. It stays compact compared to the species, which can reach 6 feet or more.

Drought tolerant once established, it asks little beyond sharp drainage; wet, cold soil in winter is what kills it, not cold alone. In marginal zones grow it in a container that can be moved under cover, or mulch heavily and accept some winter leaf damage. Remove browned or frost-damaged leaves at the base each spring to keep the fan tidy.

Common problems

Root rot

Symptoms

Plants wilt, yellow, and stunt even in moist soil; lower stems and roots turn brown, soft, and mushy and the plant may collapse. Most common in heavy, wet, or poorly drained ground.

Treatment

Improve drainage and stop overwatering, and never plant too deep. Lift and destroy badly affected plants along with the soil around the roots. Grow in raised or free-draining beds to prevent it returning.
