Mango is a large, long-lived evergreen fruit tree native to the Indian subcontinent, where it has been cultivated for more than 4,000 years. It is the most widely consumed tropical fruit in the world and one of the most productive backyard trees in frost-free climates, capable of yielding several hundred pounds of fruit annually at full maturity. Two distinct genetic populations—Indian-type and Southeast Asian-type—differ in seed germination and disease resistance, making cultivar selection important.
Flowering is triggered by a dry, slightly cool period in winter; excessive irrigation at that time delays or prevents fruit set. Grafted trees flower years earlier than seedlings and reliably produce true-to-type fruit. Trees develop a deep taproot and tolerate moderate drought once established, but consistent moisture during fruit development improves yield and size. Mango prefers slightly acidic, well-drained soil with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5 and will not tolerate waterlogged conditions. Annual pruning after harvest keeps trees at a manageable height, improves light penetration, and reduces disease pressure.
Mango leaves and bark have a long history in Ayurvedic medicine. Leaf extracts contain mangiferin, a xanthone studied for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in laboratory and early clinical research. Unripe fruit is central to South and Southeast Asian cuisines—used fresh in pickles and chutneys, and dried as amchur powder, a common souring agent in Indian cooking.
Powdery mildew
White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.
Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.
Pepper Anthracnose Fruit Rot
Sunken, circular lesions on ripening fruit with concentric rings and pink or black spore masses in the center. Spreads quickly in warm, wet weather.
Remove and destroy infected fruit. Avoid overhead watering and improve airflow with proper spacing. Rotate away from peppers and tomatoes for 2–3 years. Use disease-free seed and apply copper-based fungicide preventively in wet seasons.
Phytophthora Root Rot
Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.
Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.
Sooty Mold (Scale-Associated)
Black, powdery or crusty coating on upper leaf surfaces and stems. Affected leaves may yellow and drop in severe cases. The mold grows on honeydew secreted by scale insects, mealybugs, or aphids feeding on the plant.
Control the underlying pest infestation first using horticultural oil or neem oil applied thoroughly to stems and leaf undersides. Once pest populations are reduced, sooty mold stops spreading and weathers away over time. Rinse foliage with a strong stream of water to dislodge existing mold deposits.
Mango Malformation Disease
Vegetative malformation produces crowded, stunted, brittle shoots on young plants. Floral malformation converts panicles into dense, broom-like masses of sterile tissue; affected panicles do not set fruit and may persist on the tree for months without dropping.
Remove and destroy all malformed vegetative shoots and panicles before the next flowering season. Prune 15–30 cm below visible symptoms and sterilize cutting tools between cuts with 70% ethanol or 10% bleach solution. No chemical cure exists; use only certified disease-free planting material and avoid bark wounds during routine cultural work.
