Background

Kerria japonica is a deciduous shrub in the rose family, native to mountain thickets in China and Japan and the only species in its genus. It produces bright golden-yellow flowers in mid-spring on arching, bright-green stems and is one of the most shade-tolerant flowering shrubs available to temperate gardeners. The double-flowered cultivar 'Pleniflora'—commonly called bachelor's buttons—is the most widely sold form.

Kerria blooms on the previous season's wood, so prune immediately after flowering rather than in late winter. It spreads steadily by root suckers, which makes it useful for slope stabilization or naturalizing shaded sites, but suckers need regular removal in formal settings. The bright-green stems remain visible through winter after leaf drop, extending seasonal interest. Grow in slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5–7.0) with a consistent mulch layer to retain moisture; the plant is cold-hardy to zone 4a and handles summer heat into zone 9b with adequate shade.

The flowers and bark have a documented role in traditional Chinese medicine, with references appearing in historical records.

Powdery mildew

Symptoms

White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.

Treatment

Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.

Fungal leaf spot

Symptoms

Brown or purplish spots on the leaves, often ringed with a yellow halo, that spread and merge in warm, humid, or wet weather; heavily spotted leaves yellow and drop early.

Treatment

Pick off spotted leaves and clear fallen debris to remove overwintering spores. Improve air circulation by thinning, and water at the base so foliage dries quickly. If it persists, apply a copper- or sulfur-based fungicide at the first sign.

Phomopsis Blight

Symptoms

Irregular brown lesions on leaves, stems, and fruit. Stem lesions can girdle the plant, causing wilting above the infection point. Fruit develops sunken, dark, water-soaked spots that expand and rot rapidly in warm, wet conditions. Small black fruiting bodies may be visible inside older lesions.

Treatment

Remove and destroy all infected tissue. Avoid overhead irrigation and improve air circulation through adequate spacing. Apply copper-based fungicide at first symptoms and repeat every 7–10 days during wet weather. Rotate out of the nightshade family for at least 3 years and start with certified disease-free transplants.
