Eriobotrya japonica is a subtropical evergreen tree in the rose family, native to south-central China and widely cultivated across warm temperate and subtropical regions. It bears clusters of sweet, tangy orange-yellow fruit in late winter and early spring — among the earliest of any fruiting tree to ripen — while its large, corrugated, dark green leaves give it a bold, structural presence in the landscape year-round.
The tree produces fragrant white flower clusters in fall and early winter, when few other trees are blooming, drawing early pollinators. It tolerates moderate drought once established but sets larger, better-quality fruit with consistent irrigation through the ripening period. Well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil suits it best. Even where the tree itself survives frost, developing fruit is vulnerable to hard freezes; siting away from frost pockets is important. Thinning clusters to three or four fruitlets improves size and prevents limb breakage under heavy crops.
Leaves, known in traditional Chinese medicine as pipa ye, have been used for centuries to treat coughs and nausea and remain a key ingredient in commercial loquat syrup preparations. The fruit is a good source of beta-carotene, potassium, and dietary fiber. Seeds contain amygdalin and should not be eaten.
Fire Blight
Water-soaked, wilting blossoms and young stems that rapidly turn brown to black. Infected shoot tips curl into a characteristic shepherd's crook. Bark beneath the infection may show reddish-brown discoloration.
Prune infected wood 8–12 inches below visible symptoms during dry weather. Sterilize tools with 70% isopropyl alcohol or a 10% bleach solution between cuts. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers that produce soft, disease-susceptible growth. Copper-based bactericides applied at early flowering can reduce spread in high-pressure years.
Entomosporium Leaf Spot
Small circular red-purple spots on both leaf surfaces beginning in late spring, enlarging to lesions with gray or tan centers and red-purple margins. Heavy infection leads to early leaf drop by late summer.
Rake and dispose of fallen leaves each season. Prune selectively to improve air circulation. Avoid overhead irrigation. Fungicide applications — myclobutanil, chlorothalonil, or copper-based products — beginning at leaf emergence and repeated every 10–14 days during wet weather can limit disease spread.
Powdery mildew
White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.
Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.
Root rot
Plants wilt, yellow, and stunt even in moist soil; lower stems and roots turn brown, soft, and mushy and the plant may collapse. Most common in heavy, wet, or poorly drained ground.
Improve drainage and stop overwatering, and never plant too deep. Lift and destroy badly affected plants along with the soil around the roots. Grow in raised or free-draining beds to prevent it returning.
