Background

Forget-me-nots are the defining filler of the spring cutting garden — a low carpet of tiny true-blue flowers that makes everything else look better. Sow in late summer or early autumn for bloom the following spring; they overwinter as rosettes and begin flowering in early April. Biennial in habit, they self-seed so reliably that once established they require no further sowing.

As filler in spring bouquets, they are unmatched — the soft blue complements tulips, narcissus, bleeding heart, and almost anything else in season. Cut stems as soon as the flowers are open and condition in water. They are short-stemmed so work best in mixed arrangements rather than on their own.

Common problems

Powdery mildew

Symptoms

White or grey powdery coating on leaves — usually starting on older growth in humid conditions or when nights cool.

Treatment

Improve air circulation by thinning plants. Apply neem oil or potassium bicarbonate spray at first sign. Avoid overhead watering.
