Background

Ilex aquifolium 'Amber' is a female cultivar of English holly grown for its year-round glossy, spiny evergreen foliage and clusters of amber-yellow berries that ripen in autumn and carry into winter. The warm berry color is a notable departure from classic red-fruited forms, making it a strong specimen for winter garden structure and decorative cutting.

English holly is dioecious: this female cultivar requires a nearby male Ilex aquifolium to set fruit. Any compatible male clone planted within 30–50 feet will serve as a pollinator. Growth is moderate; plants perform best in full sun but tolerate light shade. Slightly acidic, well-drained soil suits it well, and consistent mulching over the root zone aids establishment and moisture retention. In zones 6 and 7, siting out of desiccating winter winds significantly reduces foliage scorch. Once established, plants are reasonably drought-tolerant.

Dense spiny growth makes this cultivar effective as a security hedge or screen and discourages deer browsing in most regions. The amber berries, toxic to humans and dogs, are consumed by thrushes, cedar waxwings, and other winter birds when alternative food sources are scarce.

Rake and dispose of all fallen leaves in autumn to eliminate overwintering spores. Apply a copper-based fungicide at bud break if infection was heavy the prior season.

Phytophthora Root Rot

Symptoms

Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.

Treatment

Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.

Leaf gall

Symptoms

Leaves, buds, or young shoots thicken into pale green, reddish, or whitish fleshy galls that later turn white with a powdery spore bloom before browning.

Treatment

Pick off and destroy galls before they turn white and shed spores. Improve air circulation and avoid overhead watering in spring. The damage is largely cosmetic and rarely needs fungicide.

Fungal leaf spot

Symptoms

Brown or purplish spots on the leaves, often ringed with a yellow halo, that spread and merge in warm, humid, or wet weather; heavily spotted leaves yellow and drop early.

Treatment
