Background

Taxus × media is an evergreen hybrid yew produced by Massachusetts horticulturalist T.D. Hatfield in the early 1900s from a cross of English yew (T. baccata) with Japanese yew (T. cuspidata). It combines greater cold hardiness than the English parent with stronger vigor than the Japanese parent, yielding one of the most durable evergreen shrubs available for formal hedges, foundation plantings, and topiary across the northeastern and midwestern United States.

Yew tolerates deep shade better than nearly any other evergreen shrub and responds well to repeated hard shearing without significant dieback, making it a reliable choice where permanent structure and screening are needed. It requires well-drained soil with a pH of 5.5–7.0; persistent root-zone moisture reliably triggers phytophthora root rot. Female plants produce small red arils in fall that attract birds. All plant parts except the fleshy aril tissue are acutely toxic to humans, dogs, horses, and livestock due to taxine alkaloids; the seed enclosed within the aril is equally poisonous.

Taxus species are the natural source of taxane alkaloids, including 10-deacetylbaccatin III, extracted from yew needles as a semi-synthetic precursor to paclitaxel (Taxol), a chemotherapy agent used clinically against breast, ovarian, and lung cancers.

Common problems

Phytophthora Root Rot

Symptoms

Wilting despite moist soil, yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and dark, decayed roots and crown tissue. Vines may collapse during hot weather.

Treatment

Plant in well-draining soil and avoid waterlogging. Remove and destroy affected vines. Improve drainage with raised beds or amended soil and avoid overwatering.

Root rot

Symptoms

Plants wilt, yellow, and stunt even in moist soil; lower stems and roots turn brown, soft, and mushy and the plant may collapse. Most common in heavy, wet, or poorly drained ground.

Treatment

Improve drainage and stop overwatering, and never plant too deep. Lift and destroy badly affected plants along with the soil around the roots. Grow in raised or free-draining beds to prevent it returning.

Phomopsis Blight

Symptoms

Irregular brown lesions on leaves, stems, and fruit. Stem lesions can girdle the plant, causing wilting above the infection point. Fruit develops sunken, dark, water-soaked spots that expand and rot rapidly in warm, wet conditions. Small black fruiting bodies may be visible inside older lesions.

Treatment

Remove and destroy all infected tissue. Avoid overhead irrigation and improve air circulation through adequate spacing. Apply copper-based fungicide at first symptoms and repeat every 7–10 days during wet weather. Rotate out of the nightshade family for at least 3 years and start with certified disease-free transplants.
