Background

Diascia 'Apricot Queen' is a compact hybrid twinspur that produces dense masses of small apricot-salmon flowers on slender stems from spring through fall. Its low, mounding habit suits container edges, window boxes, and front-of-border planting. Performance peaks during cool weather; it is not a heat-tolerant plant.

Native to South Africa, it grows best where summers stay below 90°F. In zones 9–10, plants may slow or go semi-dormant in midsummer and rebound as temperatures drop. Cutting plants back by half during heat stress encourages fresh growth and renewed flowering once conditions cool. 'Apricot Queen' is typically propagated from stem cuttings rather than seed to maintain cultivar consistency. It prefers moderate soil fertility; excess nitrogen pushes leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

In mild coastal climates it can provide near-continuous flowering with minimal inputs. Good air circulation around the crown reduces the risk of botrytis in cool, humid periods.

Lower leaves yellow and wilt; the base of the rosette turns brown and soft, sometimes with white fungal threads at the soil line. Plants collapse in wet conditions.

Remove and destroy affected plants. Improve drainage and avoid overhead watering. Do not mulch directly against the crown. Space plants for airflow and avoid replanting in the same wet spot.

Damping Off

Symptoms

Seedlings collapse at the soil line with thin, water-soaked stems; seeds may fail to emerge or rot before sprouting.
